ZAGG is the answer hands down..if you are looking to be able to drop the device look somewhere else other then a touchscreen phone

No need for screen protectors
The glass screen on the Hero make it extremely hard to scratch. I have dropped my on pavement already and haven't had any marks at all on the screen. I know in another thread I spoke about this, but when I asked someone at Sprint about screen protectors, they took a screwdriver to my screen and there was absolutely nothing. They said that putting screen protectors on may actually mess with the touch sensitivity when it is hot because the screen may actually trap the heat.

Anyway, I just thought I would give you heads up. I have done a lot to my phone in a little bit, and it has done pretty well.
I have thw skin that I bought from the Sprint store I like the feel and it will work nicely in protecting my device. Anything else is just unnecessary to me.
I like to slip my phone into my front pocket and the "rubberized" skin I bought was not comfortable. It added too much bulk and did not slide easily into my pocket. I reluctantly tried the phantom skinz and am ABSOLUTELY in love with it. It did take about a half hour to apply, following their directions very carefully, but was worth the time. The phone looks like there's no skin on it and it feels almost as good as it did without the skin. (I preferred the feel of the phone's back before the skin). Mine's been on for almost 3 months now and shows no signs of peeling/cracking and my phone still looks brand new.

Those can be great if you apply them correctly. It still doesn't have any real shock absorption so if you drop it, it will still break.
I actually just received my otterbox commuter case and like it a lot. I'm not using the screen protector for it tho because I can never seem to get them to go on without having a lot of bubbles and that annoys me. The case does come with a nice cloth to clean the screen tho.
I'm using the hero has a protective coating out of the box on the screen, and that's all I need. As for cases... to bulky. The hero to me is boarderline on the too think line. I love my hero, but case would be too bulky.
I don't have my Hero yet (c'mon FedEX!!! 
), but I used PhantomSkinz on 3 different Palm Pre's. Other than the difficulty in application I really liked them. Very scratch resistant and easy to clean. I also found that after a few days of use (getting your skin oils on the protector) things weren't too tacky at all. I should note that I only applied the front protector on my phones. I'd imagine getting the full body on the Hero would be difficult.

You're probably right for more serious falls, but for the types of falls my phones generally take, I've never had more than some scratches. I absolutely destroyed the look of my HTC Touch Diamond by dropping it on a sidewalk from about 4 feet, and a skin would have prevented that. Now that my Hero is protected, of course (knock wood), I have yet to drop it on anything other than carpet.

I use the Blue and Black skins that are sold at Sprint, with a cut to fit screen protector. Have had that setup since the Hero launched in the US. Works great, no issues whatsoever
