Proximity Sensor during calls - anyone had issues with this?

My One M8 has long experienced an issue with the proximity sensor during a call. The screen is not staying off for the entirety of calls, and I can see it turning on and off. The end result of this is my face hits the Settings menu, and some combination of the following happens: mobile data turned off, brightness level setting changes, auto-rotate turned off, etc. So essentially after every phone call I have to redo all of my Quick Settings. I shouldn't have to hold the phone perfectly motionless for the screen to stay off. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so how were you able to fix it (if you did)? Thank you! :D

Do you use your left or right ear for calls?

I have noticed in the past that some phones, depending on the placement of the proximity sensor, tend to favor one ear over the other,

Interesting...never heard that before, but I completely understand why that could be the case. I use my right ear for calls. This is the first time I've encountered the issue, so part of me thinks it's a defect/technical issue.
