yeah, its to turn off the screen while on a call, so that you do not accidentally press any buttons.

It is used for "in-pocket detection". If you de-select In-pocket detection you should not have the red light. setting>display>In-pocket detection.

With the two d3's that I have had the pocket detection seems to only work for a little bit until you re-boot the phone.
