I get that occasionally -- I'm not sure if there's anything you can do. If there's an option that says "Proceed via browser anyway," you could try that, but that doesn't always work either.

Thanks, went to the clubhouse, Walmart and a McDonalds after posting and tried again.
This time I got internet at all 3, McD's is tricky because you have to wait for a sign in on your browser, but I knew that so just did what was necessary. Walmart this time just worked fine.
Hopefully this is not something that will let me down. When in Florida for the winter I have a lot of data from T-Mobile but at home I only buy a small package and rely on public sources a lot.
Is this a problem on other phones as well? My zenfone never had this problem. Wonder if it is related to later android versions and more security built in.
For me, it usually happens at Safeway. It's happened on my previous phones (Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Zenfone 2). Haven't had my 2 XL long enough to check, but it will probably happen at some point. I don't know the details, but I would suspect it has more to do with poor quality/security for that public wi-fi, rather than the phone.
I sometimes get that notification warning; and a time or two, my Honor 8 wouldn't connect to my home Wi-Fi! Sometimes it's just a glitch with the connection or phone; and others, the public Wi-Fi can be a little spotty. I'd always have trouble connecting to Wi-Fi on Greyhounds; regardless of the phone I'd be using at the time.
