Pull down no longer works

A friend of mine's LG G2 pull down to access notifications no longer works. He has done a hard and soft reset to no avail. It does work when he holds the phone horizontal. Is this a setting or hardware issue?

Welcome to Android Central! That suggests a hardware problem on that edge of the screen. Does he have any other issues with touch sensitivity near that edge?

Settings>Display>Advanced Settings>Front Touch Buttons, and choose a set that has the pull down icon.
