Why do some people want CM7 on a Nexus S? Doesn't it already have a pretty stable build of Gingerbread? or does CM7 have some great benefit I have been missing out on?

Choice.... some people want something different .. No doubt Nexus S is great as is but variety is the spice of life.

Cyanogen is always far above stock ROMs. So this would be no different. It's all about the extra added features of cyan.

Well, it would probably help if you named some of these features, cause I still no point in even trying it >.> I understand choice but usually people just want CM for stock, and the Nexus S already has stock, so it shouldn't matter. If we wanted tweaks, there are people like eugene who make custom ROMs with some nice tweaks.

Being a first time Android owner I was curious of custom ROMs such as CM7.

The Settings is the main reason I use CM7

I love the integration of WIFI, bluetooth, GPS and Sound toggles (you can choose other toggles) on the notification screen

Wow, some nice valid points, already have tether and I love stock Froyo unlock screen, the toggle thing is pretty sick. The settings are very detailed for sure. I think I see it now, fine grain tuning.

Beware! There is of course negatives such as what I call 'the craving'. Because CM7 is still in it's alpha stage, the geniuses over at Crackflashers created a bunch of unoffical nightlys until TeamDouche started posting their own nightlys. I'm like a dope fiend always having to obtain the latest & greatest and immediately flash to my device. Is it necessary? Maybe. The devs are always improving their ROMs ultimately making the CM7 experience better and smoother. I just hate constantly configuring my wonder-device to my liking every so often! Or do I? hmmm...:)

I am also interested in trying some custom ROMs but there are a few things holding me back. I have already configured stock Gingerbread to exactly how I want it and a lot of my apps have custom settings saved on them also.

Would it be possible to install CM7 and keep all of my app's custom settings and home screen configurations, etc.? If not, would I be able to revert back to exactly what I have now if I installed CM7 and decide that don't like it?

Unfortunately you have to wipe data and cache when you install any custom ROM for the first time. To answer the second question, you should do a NANDROID backup (or you can find one posted on the net). It'll wipe everything off your device and you will again have to reconfigure your settings. But you'll be back on stock 2.3.1.

Hello there. I'm a first time android owner with the nexus s. I want to put cm7 on there but I have a lot of questions first such as the pros and cons of using a custom rom. Is there a place I can be pointed to to read up on such information?

There really are no down sides, only pro's.
