QQ, is adding a search button a root feature or launcher feature?

I vaguely remember hearing that in order to add a search button to the main set of ICS icons, you have to root the phone. Is this true? I can't get over how much of a step backwards that was - to remove a button that allowed you to search instantly no matter where you were PLUS to force a mandatory search bar on our homescreens that even when it's removed, still takes up available screen space... ugh.

But yeah, I'd rather not root my phone if I don't have to. If that's the only way to do it, then I'll live without it I suppose. Thanks in advance!

that is the only way to do it as far as i know. you need to root and throw some sort of flashable Mod on top of the stock OS, or to flash a custom ROM.

You'll have to load a custom ROM that includes this option. most of the major ROMs do.

You can customize the look, order, and which buttons you want.
