Question about emoticons/emoji?

If this has been answered before, I apologize, but I've been searching all night for an answer and found nothing. So, I'm very new to the android scene. On Friday I traded in my iPhone 4s for the Samsung Galaxy s4 and so far I am in love. As for my question, I know that android doesn't show emoji unless the device is rooted, but I've noticed that when my friends with iPhones send me emoji that it shows up as a black and white android version of whatever they send me. I was wondering if there's any way that I can somehow use those emoticons, is there some kind of keyboard I need?

You don't need to be rooted to use emoji.

I use GO SMS Pro ( free app ) with their Emoji Plugin . There are also keyboard apps that have emoji but go sms is my favorite.
