Question about encryption

Before I can encrypt I have to choose a 6 character alphanumeric pass code. I know I will have to use this to turn the phone on.

However, will I have to enter this every time my screen is locked or will I be able to use a separate 4 digit pin for unlocking the screen after the phone is powered on?

I think the 6 digit thing is a bit much for all day use.

The 6 digit password is only required at boot. I use fingerprint to unlock but you can use a pin if desired for unlocking normally.
