This is a rather noob question but I need a straightforward answer as most of the searching I've done has come up with wishy washy answers for me at least.

I want my end result to be a rooted Incredible with the latest version of the official froyo rom (when it comes out). Is this possible and how would I go about doing this?

If I root now that would be a waste right because then I wouldn't be able to use the OTA update?

I don't want to run CM or custom roms I just want the OTA update with root.

Should I root my phone, then wait for the official froyo update and manually install it?

I am in the same situation. I just want the newest OTA with root. I've rooted my phone with unrevoked 3 and also unrevoked forever my phone with S-Off. I haven't gotten any clear answers either but from what I've read is if you want root right away (instead of waiting til someone can fully root 2.2 without having had 2.1 rooted first) with the OTA is you have to have 2.1 rooted first and use unrevoked forever before you get the OTA. Unrevoked forever will allow you to be able to get OTA updates while still being able to root your phone.

FWIW, I rooted my phone and performed Unrevoked Forever. Now, no matter what happens I keep root and can get the update.
