Question about importing contacts

When I got a Razr in November, I linked it to my gmail account and received a contact for everyone I have ever emailed. I hated this so when I got my Nexus I linked it to verizon backup so I wouldn't have to go through and delete a lot of people. So I'm curious what people on here do to keep their contacts in order. I'm trying to make groups with my Nexus but it only lets me do it with numbers connected to gmail. I think I'm just not understanding how or what the best way to handle my contacts. Should I go to gmail and painstakingly add them in one by one? Why isn't there an option for me to take my contacts on my phone from verizonbackup and upload them to gmail?

First.. the best way to manage your contacts is from your computer. You should be able to create whatever groups that you want and then check off each contact and add it to the group of choice. Yes.. they will need to be in the Gmail account already before organizing them.

For transferring contacts from Backup Assistant to Gmail:
1. Log into Verizon Backup Assistant: https://backupassistant.vzw.com/mb/?skininfo=110
2. Click on Export to CSV
3. Save File as (or Rename to) Contacts (it should already be converted to CSV)
4. Log into Gmail: https://mail.google.com
5. Click on Contacts
6. Click on Import
7. Browse for the Contacts (.csv) file
8. Click Import

Very well explained. I just did this about a month ago for my mom. I gave her my charge. She had all of her contacts stored on her tbolt's phone memory opposed to syncing with Gmail. Follow the above listed instructions and you'll be good to go.

Thanks Cyber Warrior...excellent response. I have just a few more questions. Once I import my contacts like you outlined and later I wipe my phone for some reason .... if I sync my phone to gmail to download my contacts is there a way around it downloading every contact from every email sent to me? Or does it strictly download whats in the "Contact" area of gmail? And my last questions (lol), once i sync my phone to my gmail account and download all my contacts ... if I were to add a contact in my phone (not gmail) would it automatically add it to my gmail account? Thanks guys with the help on this.

When you create a contact in your phone, it'll ask if you want to do it phone only or to sync it with your gmail. If you chose the latter, it'll show up online. If not, it won't be there.

I'm not sure what happens to get contacts in and out of the google contacts folder online (i.e. how many emails it takes, etc.), but I usually only show contacts with #s and that solves any problem. I also LOVE to clean up contacts every month or so lol

This happened to me too. Make sure in gmail (desktop) settings you turn off 'create new contact for each conversation 'or something like that. I had about 12million contacts ending in 5464916494@craigslist.org

Simply delete the email addresses that aren't actually contacts. As I recall there's also a setting in Gmail on the pc to not add every person you email as a contact.
