Question About Rooting and Internal Storage

I have been going back and forth about rooting all week, and am about at the end up my rope with today's Market update fiasco (the new market size and it updating apps I had set to NOT update automatically because of space issues.) I am ready to either pay premium price for a new phone before my upgrade or root if that will help. I am incredibly intimidated by rooting and all of the details, as well as the complicated manner it seems to get it unrooted. I have some things I am still unclear about rooting, if someone doesn't mind explaning:

  1. Do you have to install a ROM if you root, or is it pointless not to?
  2. Is there increased internal storage with rooting, or only if you get a ROM that manages it better?
  3. If rooted, can you move apps to the SD card that you couldn't before (like Gmail updates, Maps updates, Google Music, etc.)

Thanks so much for any help, I appreciate it.

1. Rooting is simple. Just read & ask questions, where here to help.
2. I would suggest if you rooted you mind as well install a custom recovery and rom. Once you do that there are things you can do to increase internal Storage. I currently have 1gb of storage so I Don't bother with moving apps to ad card.

-No you don't HAVE TO install a custom rom but unless you just want wireless tethering, if you root and DONT install a rom the only benefit I can think of is superuser permissions which will allow you to use apps that you can't now like titanium backup or set CPU.
-YES there is increased internal memory with installing a custom rom because most remove sprints bloatware. Before root I had about 36 MB of internal memory with about 32 Apps. Now I have 72 Apps, 165 MB of total internal memory and about 80MB free now, that's with 72 frickin Apps LOL. I put up a screenshot for you to verify. I can't speak for all custom roms I use Zefies Scott Pilgrim Awesomeness but you have 2.2 custom builds and 2.3 to choose from Rom-wise
-Finally...YES you can move ANY APP YOU WANT to the SD card after rooting, installing custom recovery and most Roms. I choose the apps you mentioned and took screenshots showing I can move them to SD if I want. I choose not to with Gmail and Google Maps because I only have 2GB sd card.

Also I forgot to mention i was the same way when i got rooted in terms of nerves and brick-fear but this forun is A+ At helping members. quite simply i would not be rooted if this site didnt exist. Also I'm not sure how to post a link from my phone but go to YouTube, search "rooted lg Optimus S" and there are 3 videos by a guy named "cussindzl" 1st video is how to root with gingersnap 2nd is how to install recovery and 3rd is installing rom. Use them if you need to visually see what to do. That might help

Thank you both so much, I get it now. It sounds better than I thought for sure. That solves it then, I am going to dig into all the info on this forum and watch those videos and get my steps straight and dig in to rooting this weekend. :D

LOL that's exactly what you should do as far as a weekend is concerned. Its not a quick process but its not Chinese calculus LOL. Maybe take Saturday to prepare by research and downloading the tools you'll need to your pc. Do a lot of YouTube and forum.androidcentral.com research. Look at the xionia custom recovery page and watch all the videos you can to get a visual of what you need to do and what to expect your phone to look like. Also something rarely mentioned is make sure you phone has a nice charge when you start installing recovery. Don't let you battery hit 0% while doing that

I did it! I'm rooted and pretty stoked about it. Today I'm going to get a bigger SD card. For the first time I'm running out of SD card space and NOT internal storage lol. I'll take it! My phone is also much faster. It went pretty smooth and I have a few questions that I'll post sometime about various things if I can't figure them out, but no regrets. Thanks again for the help. :D

You wont regret it :-) I rooted mine as soon as I felt comfortable enough to not brick it and never looked back. Its the Best thing you can do to get the Max performance out of a device that seems weak but with a little work is extremely capable.
