Question About Selling

That's your best bet, especially since you were originally considering selling anyway.

I'll probably buy another before the end of the year unless somehow the 128GB Pixel 2 XL can justify what will likely be $300 more than the PH-1 after tax. The days of complaining about $700 flagships might be over. $1000 is the new bar. lol

I agree with you, unfortunately. And I don't believe the costs to build are going up that much, I think they just want to see how much money they can get out of us. Unfortunately, there is no realistic (doable) way to prevent this.

My wife had the Nexus 6p and it was having some issues after the Oreo upgrade. I called Google and had purchased the extended warranty and they replaced it for no cost with a Pixel XL. It was delivered yesterday and all I can say is wow. The Essential has it where it counts as far as hardware and build quality but holding the Pixel XL in hand and getting the software experience I have been missing was very nice. Fast camera and good photos and snappy performance.

My return envelopes come in the next 4-6 days and I will be ordering the 64GB version of the Pixel 2 XL. I wanted the Essential to be THAT phone, I am sorry it did not work out this go around. Will see what the next iteration delivers.

I'm tempted to try a 128GB 2 XL but not excited to pay $1k after tax. 64GB without an SD card slot won't cut it for me. At that size and price it does need a headphone jack, wireless charging and IPx8 water resistance — and the latter might be the only one of those three it gets.

The phone market is rather frustrating. One person's perfect fit is another person's compromise.

I am okay spending 1K on a pixel if I can move it in a year for 500+ and buy the Pixel 3. I sold this years Pixel and a chromebook for just north of 700 dollars for the Essential Phone I am returning, so it will cost me an additional 300 dollars to buy the Pixel 2 XL 128GB. I was selling and buying phones what feels like forever. I have a droid Turbo that I use in the meantime now, but usually have a phone I can use while I wait for the new phone to come out and try to sell my current phone before the price drop happens.

I am needing to upgrade my in between phone so after I get the Pixel 2, I will sell my Droid Turbo for an unlocked Nexus 6.

Modifier it sounds like the LG V30 would be a good choice for you. I looked but just hate skinned versions of Android and slow updates.

I considered both the V30 and last year's V20 (which is dirt cheap right now) but couldn't get past the update schedule and skin, just as you mentioned. Google and Essential are the only two guarantees on stock Android with reliable update schedules, so my choices are somewhat narrow there.

You bring up a good point on value — and the Pixel does tend to hold resale well. The additional price of the 2 XL won't bother me as long as it adds features I can use and doesn't suffer from the typical LG problems, especially display uniformity issues like the V30. If the specs look worthwhile, I might order a 2 XL and give it a try. It's arguably the least risky device to own at any price given Google's track record on warranty and support. Your wife's 6P is a great example.

On the flip side, for $300 less I can have a better build and get even closer to stock Android, assuming a second PH-1 works as smoothly as my first. If I try a 2 XL for a couple weeks and it doesn't work out, I have no problem falling back on a PH-1.

That sounds like a solid Plan....I would love to Essential get their software figured out. In order for me to go back to Essential they have to fix their support model, camera software, and phone OS. I am about 85% deiced on the 64GB version of the Pixel XL 2, and 50% on the color decision. Not sure if I want the black and white or just all black. I think it will depend a lot on what color the trim is on the front of the phone. I prefer black bezels.

About the Essential Extended Care warranty, I was able to get it transferred into my name after purchasing second hand but the original purchaser has to be willing to contact Essential support to initiate the request.
