Question about the buttons

I am considering the new DX2 (coming from a D1) and heard that it is likely to have the same body as the DX, just new innards. If so, then my major concern is with the hardware buttons. I have messed around with the in-store models and, while I really, really want to like the DX, the buttons just put me off. They seem recessed (a little ridge above and below seeming to get in the way of pressing them) and a bit "loose".

Am I being too quick to judge? How are those buttons in daily use? I don't need 4G since i live in a rural area that likely won't get 4G during the life of this phone, and don't need a front-facing camera, so if I could get past these buttons, I wouldn't have to wait for the Bionic.

Please tell me they are wonderful once you get used to them!

To be honest...I migrated from a Fascinate to a Droid X and while both are great phones I very much prefer the Droid X...with one exception: the buttons. The capacitive buttons on the SF are (for me; YMMV) much easier and quicker to use, especially one-handed, than the electro-mechanical clickies on the DX. Overall, though, it's a pretty minor issue...very minor. I love the DX.

I prefer the clicky buttons on the DX. My girlfriend has a Fascinate and every time I use it I touch the capacitive on accident and lose what I'm doing.

prefer the hard buttons as stated u don't click on the buttons by accident.

+1 for the hard buttons. I had a DInc and hated the capacitive buttons. I have had my DX since the day after launch and have no regrets.

I like being able to feel the home button in a dark room to get the phone out of sleep, and am very happy with my DX. Having said that, I did have a home button fail on me, which kept the phone from booting up. It would try to enter safe mode, but couldn't finish because the home button behaved as if it was stuck down. Had to get a warranty replacement, which fortunately wasn't a POS.

I am not sure why the model in the store had the buttons recessed. In reality the buttons stick up just a little bit off the surface so you can feel them. They are not hard to push at all. My wife had the OG Droid and I would accidentally touch those capacitive buttons ALL THE TIME. I like having the physical buttons.

You are guys are very reassuring! Now I will ask about the locked bootloader issue in another thread.

+1 hard buttons was a little bit to get used to but once you do you won't look back so much better than the capacative ones.
locked bootloader not really that big of an issue unless you are super crazy rom fanatic. there is a lot of rom development going on for the x granted not as much as say the thunderbolt or incredible but with speed and preformance of the x with gingerbread i wont be flashing anything else for a while.

I prefer the soft touch buttons one thing that bugs me about the dx of having the physical buttons

I have no problems with the hard buttons. In fact, they are very convenient especially if you are working in low light or the dark because of the touch factor. I've had my X since it was available in July last year and have no problems with the buttons at all. In fact, I'm interested to hear the capacative buttons are a PITA. Will give me pause when considering my next Android, which will be a while given the X is still at the top of the heap for the most part. You will LOVE your X or X2.

+1 clickies. It would take a neat feat to develop a habit of pressing buttons by accident as with capacitive. My only thing is if I lay my X down on its back with the extended battery I have the gap is bigger and I literally pull the whole phone up when Im hitting my clickies. But it doesnt bother me at all. Just what I gave up to get. And really, I wouldnt go for a DX2 when the OG DX is free on a new plan or at least alot to cheaper to switch to. It can do just about everything the 2nd one can.
