I hope I am not sounding too much like an idiot but what good do trackbacks do? Are they just to create a backlink to your site for SEO purposes?

It's basically a way for the site owner to keep track of who is linking to the site. Like if Engadget wants to properly credit this site with something. I am sure it helps the search engines as well.

Yeah pretty much for giving credit, and letting you know when your content has been linked to different places around the web.

Just like what everyone else said. So I won't repeat that. But I would also highly recommend activating a spam filter for them such as Akismet. I get at least 60 spam trackbacks a day. A lot of spammers will link fake trackbacks back to their spam site pretending they are a commenter (but based on grammar and content, no one actually falls for them).
