Getting my gold verizon s6 today to replace my iphone 6.

1) do i swap out sim or use the new sim that comes with my s6? i have used backup assistant for my phone numbers and all photos are backed up to my computer.

2) my wife is taking my iphone 6...should she swap in her sim from her old iphone 5?

3) anything I should do when I get the phone? I've read people on here resetting their phone to improve battery. may try that...anything else recommended?

4) anything i should know in making this transition? useful os features iphone doesn't have? tips/tricks to getting around and learning the os?

So use the newest sim cards and just keep the iphone 5 one as a fallback option? Is there any data I might need stored on them that I should consider backing up before transferring phones or just pop em in and go?

You should be able to use the SIM cards in both. I would get a new one though. They do wear out and need to be replaced from time to time. A new phone is a good reason to get a new card.

A reset may be needed if there is an update out already. Might as well do that before you get too deep in setting up apps and the phone.

As for the transition, http://forums.androidcentral.com/general-help-how/399060-guide-getting-started-android-2014-a.html

Verizon doesn't store any user data on the sim like contacts.

I will defer to dpham00 for anything Verizon specific, but I would get new SIMs. There is no reason not to, and chances are you have to go to the store anyway, might as well do everything all in one trip.

may have to goto store anyway -- since when did verizon stop the month-to-month discount? their chat rep had no idea what it was.

Use samsung smart switch app to transfer your information from the iPhone to the Galaxy. It works great, and it is super fast.

If you're getting an edge, a good app to have is called "apps bar" which has a functionality I think samsung should have included in the edge in the first place.

Use Google.Play music on phone and desktop so that you can continue to use iTunes for your music. That way you won't have to work to reorganize all your music on a different player.

A few comparisons in one day of use (while both devices are fresh in mind)

1) beautiful phone -- every bit as good in build quality. gold is incredible
2) s6 keyboard is way better than apple. love that number column is added to the top so you don't have to shift to enter a number. easier to type on too.
3) not a fan of the back and tab key lighting -- they should either stay on longer or not come on at all in my opinion. can this change?
4) some apps don't seem to have caught up with apple versions or aren't optimized for the edge -- cnn for example, the menu key is in the edge and a little hard to hit..also you can't scroll as you're reading, only as you complete reading everything on that screen. sometimes the screen times out. annoying!
5) apple seems to have samsung beat in earbuds. listening to music isn't as enjoyable on this phone, though speakers may be louder.

some questions for android veterans:

1) i hate the stock samsung clock. I changed my homescreen widget, but can't seem to change the lockscreen one unless I change the theme -- which options are limited on now. I tried a locker app or two, but none seem to enable fingerprint access. do I need to root? any tips there?
2) Is there a shortcut to search for something on your phone -- an app or a song for example?
3) Is there a way to reach the top of the screen easier? apple has a double tap that'll move your browser or whatever you're working in an inch or so, so you can reach the top with one hand.
4) There are multiple entries for the same contact -- one for email, one for phone for example. what is the least painful way to either just show phone number entries on the phone dialer, or combine all entries with the same name?

Those are a few things I miss on ios or wish android had

S finder accomplishes #2. This comes preloaded on the notification bar of the Sprintand t mobile models, I don't know if this is something you can add from the Galaxy app store on other variants. The Google search bar can also search on your phone but only for music, movies, etc. associated with Google Play. (You enable this through the Phone Search setting within the Google app)

To link contacts, within one of the contacts there is a field that says Connected via. There is a chain icon on the right, and you can tap that to link it to another contact. If your contacts are all backed up to your Google account, the merge functionality through Gmail contacts from your computer has an auto merge function.

My replies are bolded and blue...see below. Hope it helps.

This feature was available on previous Galaxy versions, customizing the time for when the buttons would stay lit. I just checked around and didn't see it anywhere. I'm sure it'll be available soon in some update. It is unfortunate that the setting isn't readily available. Having been a Samsung smartphone user for some time....the lay out of the hardware and these very buttons are second nature to me so even if they didn't light up, I know where they are.

4) some apps don't seem to have caught up with apple versions or aren't optimized for the edge -- cnn for example, the menu key is in the edge and a little hard to hit..also you can't scroll as you're reading, only as you complete reading everything on that screen. sometimes the screen times out. annoying!

This feature is a great one that Apple products have, where content scrolls according to your eyes. Unfortunately the Samsung counterparts don't feature this just yet (get with it Samsung/Android :p). However, in terms of how the screen times out...there is a feature to prevent this from happening dubbed 'smart stay' where the screen will stay lit while the sensor detects your eyes still looking at the screen. That can be found under the display options. Just toggle that on. Furthermore, you can set a time as to how long you want the screen to stay lit regardless of whether your face is right up on the screen. This setting is also found under the Display settings titled as 'Screen timeout'.

Look up an app called "galaxy button lights" to turn off the lights under the back and recent button. You can also adjust the duration. I just have them turned off all the time. They are unnecessary and waste extra battery. I know where they're located and dont need to be reminded. Also if you like the stock keyboard you will love SwiftKey. Best keyboard. And it's free know.
