See the comparison here. The left side is the Moto G, the right is the Moto X.

For now the Moto X seems to suffer from heavy grainy artifacts, which even the Moto G seems to fair better. Of course the X have much better details and vibrant color in ideal condition, but even in well lit situation there are still a lot of graininess.

This comparison shows while the Moto G camera aren't great with details, it is pretty acceptable for the price and some how fair better in low light situation. The Moto X camera is better and on another level compared to the G, but Motorola have some work to do to improve the software aspect of the camera.

For more camera samples of the Moto G 2014, see here.

Thanks for posting that! What were the light conditions like in those sky shots? Was it twilight? That graininess is concerning--were you able to compare it with other 2014 Moto X's? Could it be a glitch specific to your unit?

Lol, I only have one Moto X.

This was taken at probably 7:45pm. But as other photos show, even at very good lighting condition, it have more grains than a typical flagship camera nowadays does, too much in fact. I do know that by manually lowering the ISO level, it could help a bit, but the third party camera apps aren't able to do it right now probably due to lack of drivers.

I've had my Moto X for a couple days now and the camera has GOT to get much better. I'm coming from a Nokia, so maybe I was spoiled but the performance is really grainy. Low light is one thing...at a concert or whatever you're going to get what you get. But it seems like anything take after dark...even inside with all the lights in the house on...comes out looking like a Pointillism painting.

I have faith that Moto will address it... Hopefully sooner than later.

Discovery: There is a significant reduction in grains when picture is taken with HDR on, but this means you have to keep phone still and it's not for action shots.

Do you find any quality differences having the focus and exposure bracket on or off? Were your pictures taken with the bracket on or disabled?

I always have the focus/exposure bracket enabled so I can manually set the lighting level. It will help a bit if you play with the lighting, but it won't solve the underlying problem. Enabling HDR is a bigger improvement.

That's a good tip, SomeGuy. Seems to be better. The only problem is that now it's pretty slow taking the shot. But for less noise, it's probably an OK trade off...for now.
