Quicker way to switch back to 4g?

If I'm on the phone and hit a bad area while riding, my phone will switch to 1x but it never switches back until I get off the phone. Even then it sometimes takes a while to pick up the next tower. When I'm not on the phone, I don't have this problem.

Is there a way to get it to switch back without getting off the phone?

That is normal. In the bad area you are losing LTE so therefore losing VoLTE so the phone drops to CDMA (1x) for the call. It won't go back to LTE until the call is over since there is no CDMA -> VoLTE handoff.
