Qwerty Keyboard problem

I'm having this issue as well.. will have to get back to the store soon before my 30 days is up...

Went back to the store & they offered to replace it without hesitation...

Before I go ahead with the exchange - I'm going to attempt to back up all my data..

So far I've gotten these apps from the marketplace: Backup Everything, SMS Backup & Restore & SMS Backup +

Also have a 16 micro SD card that I'll simply insert in the replacement phone...

Any feedback on these apps or any other suggestions as to how I may best backup all my stuff?

Well my replacement phone ended up having the same issue.. doesn't happen as often but still...

... my friend who got a Shift a week before I told me that his does it occasionally as well...

- I may just end up sticking with this one and hope that a software update will fix the situation...

Latest exchage with HTC support about the "screen shift" issue when texting:

I spoke with an Escalations Team member and he said we have had this issue happen on every ROM version. Whether that version is official or unofficial it still happened. So this turns out to be a quirk with Android in general and he said there is nothing wrong with your device.

He also suggested you might want to try a third party messaging application from the Market to see if this works better for you.


Guess I'll try Handcent or something to see if it helps. Or just live with it. My replacement phone was fine for a while, but now the issue is cropping up, though not nearly as often as the first phone. Maybe I'll first try deleting all of the text threads since it was fine for a few weeks after I got it.

I switched from stock to Handcent to GoSMS and only had the issue on the stock messenger.

I know I am late to the game on this one, but I have this problem ALL the time when using the physical keyboard. It is a bummer because it is the one of the two things that makes me sigh with frustration about this phone (the other being the actual Phone portion freezes up and I have to reset my phone just to make a phone call). Otherwise, I am pretty much obsessed with it!

Install "GoSMS Pro" and you will be one very happy person. It works so much better/nicer than the stock SMS app, and it's free! I never have a keyboard problem with it. The stock SMS app does not play nice with the keyboard for some reason.

Thanks timmo, I just installed and sent a text with no shifting! Love the phone and this was irritating so it is nice to solve the issue.

I just took the plunge and switched from a BB 8330 to the shift this week(single tear). So far I am really liking the shift except this issue with the qwerty texting is really annoying. It happens every time I am typing a text. I plan to try another texting app. Thank you to all for the suggestions.

I've had this issue a few times but not a lot. Most of the time it would scroll up after I started typing and I'd just have to click down again and start where I left off. Minor annoyance but it isn't like my screen freaks out on me or anything just a little random scroll.

I have experienced this same problem a few times. Only in messaging. I've had my phone less than 2 weeks. Love it otherwise. Also I noticed that even tho I enabled predictive text on the slide out keyboard, every now & then the predictive text stops working. If I go back to the touchscreen keyboard & then back to the slide out, the problem corrects itself. I'm assuming it is some sort of glitch.
Hopefully they will fix it soon. In the meantime I'm not to interested in swapping out the phone.

I had this issue also. Move to CM7 and problem has not reared its ugly head since.

Just found this thread and wanted to chime in. I have had my Evo Shift since July and for the first 3 months or so and had no issues at all. Around Halloween my phone started having several issues. It started with my screen scrolling when I would hit the shift key, the first few times I thought that I had hit something by mistake. Than it started doing a shortcut type of issues, an example of this is hitting the s key saves anything that I am typing as a draft in my texts, or hitting the g key will take me to my gmail. There are several other key issues. Also if I have my keyboard open my internet page will change or move on its own. After trying several fixes including restart, removing an update that I got, turning it off, ect....nothing worked except taking the battery out for 30 seconds. But this is only a temp fix. After a few uses of the keyboard it starts again. Also, the longer you have the phone the more often it will happen. After several hours of looking, researching, and calling Sprint, the only solution is replacing the phone. And than the issue may start again. This is a luck of the draw issue, and not all Evo shifts do it. So I am going to get a new phone in a few days. Hope this is helpful to someone and it saves them all the time that I just wasted. Even with this issue still love my Evo and want another one!

You didn't mention if you tried one of the text apps available for free in the marketplace. If you read thru the thread, you will see that some posted that by using one of these, thier "keyboard" issue went away. I was as frustrated as you until I stopped using the native text app.

Used to have a similar issue on my HERO, so yea, basically, after i installed the third party i had no problems.

Try CHOMPSMS or HANDCENT (if that one is even in the market anymore..) or even GoSMS

oh, and btw, the hero doesnt even have a physcal keyboard, that one did it with the on screen so it was even more a pain in the arse...
