Qwerty Keyboard problem

Bumping this up ... seems to be happening more frequently to me now ... probably 70% of the time, esp if I have 10+ text exchanges in the conversation. I think I'll email HTC later today on this.

My issue is when Im typing eerythingis fine and sometimes when I get near the end of the first line in SMS it moves the screen up. No big deal and its random. I usually just keep typing as if nothing is happening and when Im done hit send.

Sent an email to the HTC support team and received the following reply on this issue:

I have seen this happen before on a few other devices, though it is rare. The most common solution to this would be to clear data from the Messages application. Please be aware that this may clear all text messages from the device, so if you have vital information saved in your text messages, you may want to find a third party application to back up your sms messages before performing these steps.

1. From your Home screen, tap Menu > Settings
2. Tap Applications > Manage Applications
3. Tap Messages and then Clear Data
4. Perform a soft reset on the device by removing the battery for five seconds, reinserting the battery, and then powering the device back on

If you are still having any issues, you may need to clear some temporary files and third party applications using the steps below. If you have a lot of text messages saved on your device, you may also want to delete some of these by tapping and holding on the thread or message and selecting delete.

Clear Temporary Internet Files:
1. Navigate to your Browser
2. Tap Menu > More > Settings
3. Tap on the following: Clear All Cookie Data, Clear Form Data, Clear History, Clear Cache.
4. Soft reset your device by removing the battery for five seconds, reinserting the battery, and then powering the device back on.

Delete Third Party Applications:
1. Navigate to Home > Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Menu > Filter > Third Party Applications
2. Uninstall any applications that you downloaded just prior to getting this error.
3. Uninstall any applications that you do not use
4. Soft reset your device again by removing the battery for five seconds, reinserting the battery, and then powering the device back on.

If you are still experiencing this issue, you will need to perform a hard reset on your device. Please Note: A hard reset will delete all personal information and restore the device back to factory default settings. You can perform a hard reset by going to Home > Menu > Settings > SD & Phone Storage > Factory Data Reset.

After the factory reset, if you are still having issues you will need to contact our Warranty & Repair department for further assistance. Their number is 877.293.0807 and their hours are 8AM to 8PM EST Monday through Friday.

So they are basicly saying they don't know why it is happening and for us to troubleshoot it for them or swap out the phone? Thats the cliffs notes version as I read it. LOL

After reading this thread the same day it was posted, I have made a point to watch for this problem. I can now say after 8 days and countless messages sent that it has never happened on my Shift. Can't help but think it might be a problem limited to a certain batch of phones.

I think that this may be an issue with particular sites, but I will see if I can find any pattern.

Its not sites for me its text messages that it is doing it in, I may try and exchange my phone to see if it is maybe just a batch of phones that had the issue

using handcent sms i have never experienced that problem (or i dont think i have at least) but ill keep an eye out for it in the future

I followed the steps suggested by HTC support (other than factory reset) and it did not work. The steps to delete all of my text messages also did not work so I went in and manually deleted all 80 or so threads. Did a reboot and it still has the screen jumping up and losing focus when texting. Guess I have to try the factory reset now. Anyone know a good utility to backup my phone numbers (i.e. my contacts for which I do not have gmail contacts for, only phone numbers -- from my old phone).

I have been using Go SMS lately and have yet to experiance the screen shift I once experienced on day 1 of owning the phone.

I tried to create the error today by sending myself text messages but was un-successful (using stock messenging app).

OK thanks for the detail. I have submitted this to our Product Marketing team and will add to this thread when I have an answer on when this may be opened up for investigation with HTC.

Please keep me posted on this and give me as much detail as possible on this. I report issues that manifest on the forums to our device teams weekly.

Thanks.

I just picked up 2 shifts for my daughter and myself - bth coming from Pre's.

We are both having this exact problem(s) -

1. Sudden loss of focus while typing a text message.

2. Screen not positioned properly (have to scroll down to see complete data entry area).

It's really annoying. I can't see any specific sequence of events that leads to the loss of focus. At first I thought I was just being fat fingered - but my daughter says the same thing happens to her.

You can recreate part of the problem by doing this:

1. Open message thread in portrait mode.
2. Slide keyboard open (before rotating to landscape).
3. Rotate to landscape. Screen is not in proper position.

You will notice the when you open a message thread, there is a second "flicker" where the thread is positioned properly, with the text entry window showing completely. This second "flicker" do not happen when the phone is oriented/keyboard open in certain combinations.

having this issue as well exactly as its described here already. really quite annoying seeing i bought this phone specifically so i can text without problems.

if anyone figures out a solution please pass it on.

Also having this exact problem.. not enough to make me get rid of this phone because I love it, just a little annoying. I am not going to do and hard reset because apparently that does not solve the problem, and then I would have to set my phone back up the way I want it. Should we just wait for an OTA update or should I go back to RadioShack and ask for a new one while it is still within my 30 days?

Well my phone eventually got to the point where I could barely type one word and go to the next without it jumping on me. I took it back and got the regular evo and I am much happier now. Feels like a more solid device with no moving parts. Bottom line is the sprint store said nobody had been coming in with the same problem so it must have just been my phone. When I explained to them that there WERE!!!! other people having the same problems as me I pretty much got the old shoulder shrug so I told them to just give me an evo and I was out of there. Doesnt seem like they give a crap so why should I anymore. Have a good one guys and gals I'll be in the evo forum. Good luck on all your phones trying to get them to fix them.

Have the same issue with my shift. I'm already on my second shift as the first had an unrelated problem. I have experienced this on both devices. I know I've preformed a hard reset on the last device and while I believe it continued to move the screen down on occasion I cannot say for certain. Happens about 80% of the time though I don't notice too much as I've found myself using the on screen keyboard about 50% of the time anyway just for short messages.

Soooo, it's been over a month and still there's not a definitive fix for this or a reason why... Like everyone else, it's not overly annoying, but it does start to bug me after it does it a few times. Please figure this out HTC!

I exchanged my first Evo Shift for a new one and the screen focus jumping issue does not seem to be happening anymore. However, the problem where you are not prompted for your pin/code when activating the phone via sliding the keyboard out unless you have it set to immediately lock, is still a problem (i.e. if you have it set to lock after 3, 5, 10 etc minutes, you can slide the keyboard out after 15 mins and the phone is wide open and ready to use).
