in the recovery if i choose to "Wipe ALL user data" will it erase my sd card too?

Nope, it will erase all the text messages, call log, apps and setting you have, but it shouldn't mess with your SD Card (music, camera pics, etc.).

As a follow up, you might as well copy all the SD card contents to a backup area (folder on your desktop) just in case. After you erase the user data, flash a rom and you're good to go.
