Radio Apps do not work when Bluetooth speaker connected

Hello Everyone: I am having problems with the combination of radio apps (e.g. TuneIn, CBC Radio, NPR), and a Bluetooth speaker (Blackweb SoundPebble). The apps work fine and will play through the Nexus 5 speakers or headphones when no Bluetooth speaker is connected. However, when I connect a Bluetooth speaker, the apps do not work - they don't get past the title screen. The Bluetooth speaker works OK with locally stored files e.g. music saved to the device.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Does that happen with Bluetooth headphones as well? Just wondering if it's a Bluetooth issue in general, or if it's specific to that Bluetooth device.

Hi B. Diddy - thanks for your reply. I don't know if the problem occurs with Bluetooth headphones - I have used only the standard/3.5mm jack attached headphones.

Check the Bluetooth connection for the speakers - make sure the media box is checked. (Just a shot in the dark - the problem sounds like something else, because if it wasn't checked the app would work but the sound would come from the phone's speakers, but check anyway, it just takes a few seconds.)

Hi Rukbat: I tried all combinations of the Bluetooth settings for the speaker, including ensuring Media audio was on/checked, but the problem persists. One app (CBC Radio) sometimes displays the message Temporary connection problem. Please try again, and if Tunein responds, it shows the message An error occurred. And this is even after I have disconnected the speaker and turned off Bluetooth - it takes a restart for the radio apps to work again.

When this happens, does the device also lose the web connection? Bluetooth and wi-fi can sometimes interfere with each other, since they both reside on the 2.4 GHz band (unless, of course, you're using the 5 GHz wi-fi band).

Hi B. Diddy: Yes, you're right - it's not just the radio apps, it's connectivity in general that is disabled when this happens. So any app with a web dependency will not work in this situation. Disabling WiFi restores connectivity, and the radio apps work with the Bluetooth speaker, although I assume at this point all traffic is going through the carrier/data signal?

Do you know if this a known problem and if is there fix or workaround?

Yes, data would then be through the 3G/4G mobile data. Is your router dual band? If so, use the 5 GHz band. If it isn't dual band, then see what happens if you log into the router's settings and change the wi-fi channel that's being used.

B. Diddy: Well, I changed the router wireless channel (from Auto (1) to 2) and the initial results are very favorable. I was able to play audio for an extended period with the Bluetooth speaker connected, and with no interruption to WiFi service. Time will tell if this is permanent solution, but right now it looks good.

Good to hear. Wi-fi Analyzer is a handy app to see which channels around you are most congested.

Did you figure a way to use the CBC app connected by Bluetooth two speakers as a wake up alarm clock?
