I pre-ordered today...errr...yesterday (3am, i should go to bed) at Radio Shack. Anyway, pre-ordered two Evos and did not pay taxes (as it should be) on the $50 gift card they gave me. I was the first one to pre-order at this store but apparently the receipt has a pin# (?) towards the top that indicates how many Evos have been pre-ordered so far throughout all of the Radio Shacks (according to the store manager). My first one made #13252 and in the 2-3 minutes that it took him to process the second phone order, it made #13408. If he is right about the meaning of that #, that is a crazy jump in so little time.

The tax is on what you pay, thus, the discounted price.

I agree that it is much smarter to go to RadioShack since they offer $20 towards accessories for a phone you are going to buy anyway, whether or not the $20 are offered.

You SHOULD NEVER pay taxes on a gift card because you are not purchasing any product or service. If you paid taxes on your giftcard/deposit, go back and have them correct it.

It doesn't matter how many times you have exchanged a phone due to defects, you will be eligible for the buy back/trade-in program. RadioShack also has a trade-in program for your old devices. So if you don't care about your old device, I recommedn you get your Evo there. It's about $100 trade value for a Palm Pre in good condition. Then add the $20 accessories to that. Good deal.

If you have a discount on your account, it will not be affected. The discount is per account and not per device. You get the certain percentage off depending on what your monthly recurring rate is.

I wish radioshack bought back accessories too. This Palm touchstone is gonna be useless to me soon... I guess i'll sale it on ebay.

Why would anyone pre-order from BestBuy when you get the 20$ credit from RadioShack...?

Because some of us work for bestbuy and the store discount we get on accessories I will be buying for the evo far exceeds the 20 dollars RS is giving you and bestbuy also offers instant rebates as well. =]

The only major downside to this is that technically all bestbuy employees are blacked out from purchasing this device until the 6th and are unable to pre order the phone. =[

Thankfully I have found a loophole for my situation. Technically the phone is under my families name and I forgot and never got around to switching it to mine and a cool employee at one of the sprint repair centers put the discount on the account anyways. So I should be able to just have a parent pre order the phone for me.

If I'm not mistaken, your 15% discount is associated with your MRC (monthly recurring charge) and is already coded on your account. Swapping your ESN (which is all you're essentially doing by upgrading your phone) and adding the up-charge for 4G, and the hot-spot charge if you choose, should NOT impact the 15% discount you have associated with your account. In fact, you should be able to enjoy 15% off the newly added monthly recurring up-charge(s) as well. The only thing the discount doesn't apply to is the Sprint insurance plan I believe. I'd call Sprint customer service immediately after activating your EVO just to make sure RS didn't screw it up ... just to be safe.

Thanks for the answer. That's what I was thinking as well, but I didn't understand how RS applied the update. I was thinking that they might make you sign a whole new contract, one that wouldn't have my discount applied. If it's just an updated contract with all of the original terms and discounts, then I'll be pre-ordering my EVO from RS today.

Thanks again.

did you pre-order? the mile long receipt they give you has all that info.

ps: i couldn't vote in the poll b/c i pre-ordered at both places. if RS decides to release the phone a few days early (as speculated by an insider), I win. if RS blows their order and doesn't expect to get phones in on time, i go to BB. either way, i have a gift card to use for phone accessories, etc.

Read that novel of a receipt, its not there... Only the terms, a $10 survey offer, and a advertisement for another gift card.

Will go back to the Shack and ask about my accessory discount.

No, I specifically asked that, and they told me that I have to pay 199 + tax (and use my 50 card to pay for part of it) and in that case they are actually double taxing me, because they apply the tax to the full amount, and not to 149)

(BTW, I'm in Texas, and the tax here is not 5%, it is 8.25%)

show them your receipt that says you already paid tax on $50 of the phone. that's what i'm doing.

if i get a lot of run-around and guff, i'll eat the extra 3.34 or whatever i paid and frown really, really hard at the sales associate. that'll teach him.

I talked to the guy from Best Buy that I pre-ordered my EVO from today and he said to bring in a copy of the Radio Shack ad when I pick up my EVO and they should match it. Hopefully he is correct.

Hey guys: I have a question. So I am a premier member and it shows on Sprint's site that my second line is not eligible for an upgrade until early next year so I figured only my main line would get the Evo and my husband would have to wait or pay full price. When we went today to pre-order the Evo at The Shack, their system showed that BOTH lines would be eligible on June 1st so we reserved 2! Is there a reason I should be concerned about this? I don't want to go and pick them up and realize that the second line will cost me full price.

Thanks,
Keri

Kerrir000,

I would be concerned with the discrepency. If you want, you can send me a personal message with your phone number and zip code and I can check for you to see if both your lines are eligible.

For the rest of you:
it is possible that RadioShack will run out of preorder Evo's. Place your order quick, so as not to be the ones that have to wait in line on the 4Th.

RS and BB websites also have a place to check your upgrade eligibility. check there.

i would imagine if you arrived on the 4th and they wanted you to pay full price for one, you could just refuse to buy it. bummer not leaving with 2 evos, but you'll at least keep your money.

Pre-ordered my Evo at a local Radio Shack in Kentucky yesterday. Out of the three salespeople present, one didn't know the phone existed, one was unaware of the whole pre-order process, but one was completely informed. I was the first to pre-order and they stated that each store was supposed to have two devices on-hand for the launch in addition to any pre-orders. You walk out of the store with a $50 gift card and the paperwork showing a reservation for a phone. He stated there was a requirement to pick up the phone on 4 or 5 June or the phone would be available to sell to other customers. He didn't mention the required $10 per month plan add-on for the Evo (and I didn't either) but I'm sure it will come up during the activation process. When I left all three of the sales associates were scanning through the sales instructions on their computers.

Thanks dwhitman! I didn't even look at my two preorder receipts from Radio Shack and that $20 coupled with the additional $40 in gift cards will really help us in picking up some accessories for our new Evos!

I'm another launch day Pre convert. I went to BB and preordered, but didn't realize that trading in my phone would only work if I had bought the Pre at BB in the first place - I got it at RS. So I gave up my pre order and walked over to RS. Went from 30th in line to 4th. :) Here's an (I think) unique question. I'm going to be out of town when the Evo launches, so since I have the RS gift card, couldn't I potentially walk into any RS and get an EVO on launch day as long as they have them in stock and they're not promised to a pre order?

Zakernet,

Yes, you can. I would recommend purchasing it from the store you pre-ordeered from because the Evo is placed in your name to the credit of the associate who took your order. But yes, as long as the Shack has more in stock that are not preordered, you can get it.

Also note that each Shack will receive an average of 2 Evo's in addition to the ones that have been preordered, so... your chances are slim.

P.S. I am also a launch day pre convert :-)
