RAZR overclocked out of the box?

So, I came across an interesting article that says the RAZR will ship with TI OMAP 4430 dual core chip. For those of you paying attention at home, that chip is rated up to 1.0 Ghz. The Galaxy Nexus will ship with a TI OMAP 4460 dual core chip. That chip is rated up to 1.5 Ghz.

Yet both phones tout a 1.2 Ghz chip. Assuming the above is correct, the stock RAZR will come overclocked, while the stock Galaxy Nexus will come underclocked. Not all 1.2 Ghz phones are created equal apparentlyl.

Not sure how I feel about that given that one of these two phones will be my next, or if I should even care, but I though it was interesting nonetheless.

It is being reported this morning, according to Motorola's Developer Network site (Motodev), that the Razr will be using the OMAP 4460 processor just like the Galaxy Nexus.

If this is true, then the 4460 would be underclocked to 1.2 GHz from its potential of 1.5 GHz.

wow so this is making it a very tough decision. Besides ICS, which the Razr will get, the only other main difference between these phones is qHD vs 720 HD and screen size. Does anyone know how the gpu's differ on these phones?

It looks like TI is having issues clocking the 4460 at 1.5 so I would not be surprised if both RAZR and Nexus have an underclocked 4460. Since 4430/4460 share the same GPU with the 4460 having a higher clock on both CPU/GPU as the only difference.

The 4470 will have a very different design.

Droid Life apparently reached out to Motorola and they confirmed that it was the 4430.

Actually, I was more skeptical of the 4460 because of the problems TI was having. Moto was having trouble getting 4460 from what I read.

the specs between the two are negligible. The lower rez on moto might make it a hair faster when both have ics. The moto advantage is it's smaller and will work less with les rez. Teh nexus has ics now it might take moto 6 months to get this and the nexus will constantly be updated. If I can cherry pick give the razr the ti 4460 and ics off the bat a unlock bootlader and it would be a god. The nexus with the beter screen give me a better gpu and it would be perfect as well. Both phones are stellar it will come down to playing with both

They are definitely both using the 4460. There is 0% doubt about this...both phones obviously clocked at 1.2 in what I can only assume is in the best interest of the battery life.



Edit: NM, I see I was apparently completely mistaken. Thought it was confirmed 4460 but it appears there is a lot of doubt now. My bad.

Oddly though, Moto's dev site was just as confused as you. Apparently they either were guessing, given incorrect information, or have no clue. I think all three of those options are valid possibilities at this point...

Looks like the dev site changed the specs of the chip to the 4430.

..which basically brings this thread full circle.

The 4430 is rated for 1GHz while the 4460 is rated for 1.5 GHz, yet both sport 1.2 GHz ratings, meaning RAZR is OCd while GalNex is UCd out of the box.

Glad I rechecked moto's site before posting. I was really hoping for at least the 4460. Looks like that isn't happening. I don't think it being clocked at 1.2 will effect much but I wouldn't think a 4430 clocked at 1.2 would be as good as the 4460 at the same rate.

Yeah, this is definitely interesting. The Motorola site used to list the processor as the 4460. Now, it says 4430. I wonder how much, if any real world difference that will make?

So what you're saying is you don't think the Thunderbolt is very fast?

I think it's fast enough. There is a difference between Network speed and Operational speed. Network speed it's a racecar, Operational speed it's fast enough, but it won't keep up with the Razr...
