Reason I think an announcement is immenent: We're in the calm before the storm

Wow people, should they just open a store so we can all do this?

I like this type of thread, it's not fanatical and is patiently informed.

I wondered whether the leak on Google Play also gave Google an opportunity to gauge the latent demand for the Nexus 5 - afterall it'd be no sweat for them to monitor Google Play clicks to devices along with general "Nexus 5 latest news" searches. Armed with this info - coupled with no launch date - they can ramp up production in the meantime to meet the expected demand and because they haven't set a launch date, delay it without anyone knowing and thereby averting a Nexus 4 debacle.

At least, this is what I would try to salvage from the leaking mess if I were in Google Towers....

I think Google got so sick of all the leaks about the N5 that they were like '**** it, let's troll'. And then started with Nestle to put out all these random 'cryptic' KitKat clues that actually mean nothing.

Someone has to poison the well.

I'm going with the Nexus 5 is deeply flawed and they have to scramble to fix it or face an ugly black eye. Anyone remember the "How can it be delayed if it hasn't been announced?" battles over the CDMA Galaxy Nexus and guess what. It was deeply flawed and required immediate updates just to provide half-decent functionality as a phone. As an Android device, it rocks, but they couldn't deliver the basic functionality that allowed the thing to get into the stores by Black Friday.
Anyone who denies it was deeply flawed, answer why even Google has given up on that phone.

Looking forward to KitKat, though.

That's a very different thing...it was the first LTE-enabled Nexus phone, and designed by Samsung with a crappy radio. Until the Note2/GS4 Samsung radios on Verizon/Sprint were *terrible*. That was the biggest issue with the Galaxy Nexus CDMA.

GSM, on the other hand, they've been designing phones for years for. LTE now has a storied supportive history, and just last year Google released the Nexus 4 with LG, the same company making this one. I'd say there's virtually no way they could "[mess up]" this phone so badly it had to be delayed.

More likely is that they've planned for around this time and are releasing tidbits as hype, or possibly the FCC delayed them slightly.

Yup, that settles it, I'm giving out KitKats this year for halloween at my house; nobody else will understand but I'll enjoy it ;)

Pretty sure last year's suddenness was weather/disaster related. There was an actual event scheduled at one time, and then it was cancelled. I don't really see that happening again. Not with Apple and Nokia both having press events in the past few days.

It was on Oct. 18 last year that Google announced and sent out invitations to a Monday, Oct. 29 "event" in NYC. No particulars. The event of course was canceled due to Sandy, and Google just did a press release thing.

I don't think Google is going to say, "Hey, let's do the press release thing again, that worked out GREAT!" This would be an excellent time to have an event. A picture of Apple's iPad Air unveil just went live in the dictionary under the word "snorefest." The movie "The Internship" just came out on DVD/BR a couple of days ago and will be PPV next week, so there is already some baseline Googliness out there. I bet there will be an announcement/invite any time now to an event in 7-10 days. Possibly even at the GooglePlex itself. Why not?

Edit: and to tie in what revtech mentions above, it's also only one week until Halloween, which is surely when sales of KitKat bars hit their peak.

I love how everyone is looking to Nestle for Nexus 5 answers (clues)..... That just doesnt make sense.
I honestly cannot even imagine how much money Nestle is making from all this publicity, But im sure they are loving it.

Im guessing some weird halloween press event to show off Kitkat 4.4 with Nestle, separate from the Nexus 5.
