Reason why LG G3 charges slowly...

So after being frustrated about my G3 taking forever to charge I decided to to some investigation and found some disappointing news. It was bad enough that my brother's MOTO X has Quick Charge 2.0 so I wasn't happy at all about my G3 taking forever to charge. So I took to Amazon to purchase a USB volt meter to test the charger that came with my LG G3. While it is rated at 5.0V and 1.8A I was disappointed to see that it was only outputting 4.93V and 0.76A. I then tested the Nokia AC-60U charger that came with my Lumia 1520 and got much better results. It was outputting 5.10V and 1.22A while being rated at 5.0V and 1.5A which was a huge improvement over the stock G3 charger. I am now using the Nokia charger to charge my G3 and I am now getting noticeably MUCH faster charging times. So if your LG G3 is charging slowly get a better charger but beware as the Samsung charger which came with my Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 which was rated at 2.0A only tested at 0.86A on my tester. I'm just going to stick with my Nokia charger since it's kicking **** charging my G3. Hope this helps you guys who are having issues charging your LG G3....

With the charger that came with my LG G3 my phone takes 2 1/2 hours to fully charge.

This doesn't surprise me... I have to say that LG doesn't focus much quality resourcing into it's chargers. Our household has had 4 LG devices (2 Nexus 4's, my G3 and also the official Nexus 4 Qi charger from the play store). On the qi charger and one of the N4's phones the plug started buzzing and almost clicking when plugged in without the phone charging. The noise was so loud I stopped using them out of fear that they were defective. I'm not an expert but to me the build feel does feel a bit cheap too.

That being said I am pleasantly surprised at how quickly my new G3 phone charges. At work the other day I was able to go from 10% to 70% in about a half hour.

1) The amount of current that charging draws depends on the resistance th phone presents to the charger and the charging voltage. Current equals Voltage divided by resistance. No charger or phone can change Ohm;s Law.

2) Fully charging a battery usually means that you're starting from almost fully discharged. That will shorten the life of the battery drastically. See the second chart at Battery University - How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries. 40%-60% is about the sweet spot for prolonging the life of the battery. (If you need more than that capacity, and don't want a larger back for a larger battery, buy a spare battery and an out-of-the-phone charger. For a G3 that's about $20 for the pair.)

Wow from 10%-70% in half hour is unheard of for G3. This is the first time I've heard of that. Congratulations to you.

Yeah, I am getting about the same performance. it charges pretty damn fast.

Mine went from 7% - 77% in an hour.

Unheard of? Is that based on a scientific poll or some special knowledge? Seems pretty normal to me. Mine charges plenty fast. I haven't timed it or anything, but fifty to sixty percent in an hour sound about like what I usually get.

Have LG replace your charger. I have 3 oem LG ones (from optimus g, g pad and g3) and all charge the same.

My LG charger is very fast. I also ordered a blackberry 2.0A charger from Amazon that is just about as fast. LG has actually been using "fast charging" for a couple years now on their top phones. I don't know why they don't advertise it as much anymore.

*Disclaimer -- I realize that all variants of the G3 may not come with the exact same model of wall charger and cable.

First, thanks OP for the testing done with your USB Volt Meter, that's quite nifty, I may pick one up myself!

That said, that does not look like my stock cable that came with my G3 (but see above disclaimer). My USB-A connector end does not have that... how do i describe it... flexy joint lookin' thing (sorry for the non-tech jargon!).

Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 requires 3 components: compliant wall charger, compliant cable, and compliant phone/device. As you know, all USB cables are not alike but they all look fairly similar. Can you humour me and try your same test with the same wall chargers but different cables?

So I just ran my phone down to 9% and plugged it in. I'm afraid I have to adjust my claim from earlier. Sorry to post without performing a scientifically validated process first.

I stand corrected because it took 53 minutes for me to go from 9% to 71%. I made my claim based on an emergency charge I had to do over a recent lunch break. I was so impressed I must've over stated.

The point was though that with only a half hour charge that day I was able to bring my phone to a state where it was completely usable for the rest of the day when I forgot to charge it the night before. I could never do that with my previous phone.

I also find that my g3 charges very quickly. I can't really find any faults with this phone. Well done lg!

my G3 charges from 15% to 100% in 1hour 30 minutes, I think even less (it is really fast). I have to watch clock next time :)
replace your charger, is not ok.

Slow charging was NEVER an issue when I had the G3. The 2 amp stock charger it came with charged that 3000mAh battery fast. Never any complaints.

Mine takes hours, between 3 to 4 hours if charge is around 35%. Sometimes It will go all night with the charger and cable included and still won't be charged completely and gets hot. I have tried other charges including Samsung Galaxy Tablet 7, but they all take too much time. My phone is a D850 (AT&T LG G3). Any suggestions are welcomed.

PS : Not only does it take a lot of time to charge, but, battery life is mediocre at best. With moderate use I can barely make it to the afternoon without a quick charge. Coming from a Blackberry Z30 phone, and comparing it with my wife's iPhone 5 or iPhone 6, this phone is really behind in battery life. Blackberry Z30 could go a full day with intense use and almost 2 days with moderate use. My previous Nokia Lumia 920 and the iPhones gave about the same battery life as the Blackberry. It's disappointing to return to Android after more than 2 years and still see battery life as a significant issue. From a battery life's perspective, Blackberry 10 OS, iOS 7/8, and even Windows Phone 8.1 beat Android.

IT sounds like something is definitely wrong with your phone. Either the battery is defective or you've got an app or process running out of control

Have you completely shut the phone off, left it off for a few minutes, and powered it back up? If not, do that and see if things get better.

What does the battery information screen (in settings) say is using most of the battery?

How much screen on time do you typically have during a day, and what brightness do you keep the screen at?

Charge the phone to 100% to reset the battery stats (not 90%, or 99%), remove the charger, use the phone until the battery is down to 50% of below, and do screen captures of the battery stats screens, and post them here.
