Receiving messages without data/WiFi

Hi guys!

So, just a couple hours I was out of home and when I checked my phone it had received a couple messages through Whatsapp with my data off the whole time, how is it possible?

WiFi was on, but it was a place without any open or known access points that the phone could have connected by itself, and even though, it should not connect automatically to an unknown network, right?

This is bugging me because I was travelling a couple days ago and used my phone on a lot of different WiFi networks, so when I got home I reset all network definitions, and now I'm worried that this may have screwed up my phone somehow...

Any help is much appreciated guys!

Are you on a custom ROM or official firmware

If you connect to wifi connections that have the same name as other ones you have previously connected to example xfinitywifi it will connect automatically if wifi is on when you are near the Hotspot aka router

I thought about this possibility too, but I guess it's unlikely to find an open hotspot with the same name as one I had stored in my phone...

Could it be a bug? Like even it shown data as off, some APN kept working for some odd reason...

I tested it yesterday, turning both WiFi and data off, after another network reset and it was working fine... All data dependable apps were off... Same thing this morning...

I was worried it could be a malware or something alike, do you think is possible to be one keeping my data on?
