Reception (compared to old feature phones)

Hi everybody,

I have read the thread that is currently four pages long about the Verizon SGS4's reception. It seems like there are some mixed reviews, so I thought that I would ask kind of a more specific question. How do you think Verizon's SGS4's reception would compare to Verizon feature phones? I would be coming from an LG enV touch (I'm still old school...I know! ). Do you happen to have any insights how the two phones would compare? Reception is important to me and I think if I got a phone with worse reception than what I currently have, it would drive me nuts.

I like the reception on the S4. It's more or less the same if not better than my S3. I never have any issues with it.

I have never had a problem with my S4 reception, not even in comparison to my old Motorola flip phone with a stub antenna. But it's really hard to say for sure unless you have a field strength meter, a controlled environment and a known transmitter. Verizon seems to add towers now and then, so since there has been a pretty good span of time since my last feature phone and now I can't be sure it's any better or worse. I can say they both lost reception in the Zones of Death (tm), one of which is just east of 271 on I90, and the other on I90 just 3-4 miles east of the Ohio/PA border.

I used to drop where routes 44 and 90 cross, with any phone. But not anymore. I attribute that to Verizon building up service, not to the newer phones.

As far as reception.....as in making a phone call, no I have no issues. I haven't in MANY MANY years of VZW. That is why I have never left VZW. As far as a voice call, I rarely if ever have a problem. As far as Data? Well I have had a SIM issue and now can without a doubt confirm it's data reception is no where near what HTC was. This phone prefers 3g to 4g. My HTC would get 4g no matter what, if a signal was there. I consistently had it in my house since November when the tower went 4g live in my town. With the S4, I'm back to using Wifi most of the time at home. The s4 doesn't stay connected to 4g and it sometimes doesn't even connect when force into LTE only mode with Phone info app. In strong 4g areas, I don't have a problem, but where I live is a fringe area and apparently Samsung doesn't work well in the fridge....even with my friends S3. I'm not complaining. What the S4 lacks in 4g connectivity, it more than makes up for it with battery life and responsiveness over my Rezound. You take the good with the bad.

Are Samsung devices really a step below Motorolas in antennas and signal strength? I live in a pretty solid 4G area, so I doubt it'll affect me much anyways.

The note 2 and s4 are doing just as good as my Motorola razor max did on reception.

It's hard to compare the reception of a smartphone like the S4 to a feature phone because it's generally the DATA signal that folks are referencing when commenting on a device's "reception". When it comes to making phone calls and sending SMS texts and stuff like that, the S4 should be pretty much on par with any feature phone out there. Many Samsung smartphones, despite being good at so many things, have a bit of reputation for having "weak" data radios, though I will say that the S4 seems to do much better than my old S3.

Not sure about real world results, but yes, Motorolas seem to have best reputation at least among Verizon Android phones for having the best radios.
