Recipient Can't See Emoji

Hi,

So my husband and I both have a Galaxy S4 from AT&T. we both downloaded the same emoji app from the playstore. If I send an emoji in a message to him I can see it on my end but on his end it shows up as ?????? and the same when he tries to send one to me?? Any suggestions? With all the things the S4 is capable of I don't understand why sending an emoji is such a hassle.
