Recommend a tablet

Can someone explain to me what is the advantage of an android tablet over an ipad? Exclude price as a factor. I'm an android user, and will always stick with an android phone, but I don't see the same need of rooting/modding for a tablet that I see with the phone. So my question is why get an android tablet? I'm a mac user, (who hates the iphone), but in my experience, I have yet to see where it would be better to have an android tablet.

Control over your own device. With all Apple products you are limited to what you can and can't do with it. With an Android device you have complete control over your device. Want to put a new ROM on it? Go for it! Want to put movies you torrented on your tablet? Go for it! etc etc

Also, the price tag is much better and much more reasonable. While Apple indeed releases amazingly solid items, you are at Apple's mercy to what you can and can't do.

I get that and all, which is why I prefer an android device, but I don't feel I need the same control on my tablet. My biggest concern buying an android device is content. I KNOW I have the content on an iPad.

I just picked up my second iconia and it's great. If you can't get a Nexus 7 I would say look at the iconia for a great 7" tab.

Off topic. SugarHill, the reason you should choose Android over iOS is absolutely nothing. Do what feels right for you and don't let anyone tell you different. This isn't a one size fits all thing. Anyone that disagrees with that is either selling something or so narrow minded they shouldn't be giving advice.

I think some of the "hardcore" forget that these devices are for fun...a hobby if you will. Nothing to get overly fanatical about.

I honestly wish I got the Iconia 7 instead of the 10

Besides the usual os things like customization and openness...

The reasons I chose android are expandable memory, ability to pop a jump drive in for files and media, micro hdmi out, and and the fact that I have a fully integrated keyboard and can plug any any usb mouse in instead of blue tooth imitations that are clunky and not integrated. Or at least those were the big ones. There are also pluses like not having to deal with Satan's music player(itunes) and having more freedom in media file types and changing default apps.

Pluses for the ipad are app and some website optimization and the fact that you are going to be one of the cool kids like everyone else.

Tablets are still toys like it or not. I they are not yet made to do any large amount of real work which is sad. Android tablets are more function and my Asus with the dock is as functional as you are going to get which is why I have it. I can carry it around instead of my laptop and do most of what I need. An ipad I could not do this with because of the lack of file management, crappy keyboard, and having no ports.

Android should be pushing the functionality envelope and driving the market, but sadly they are doing what they always do and allowing apple to lead and pushing novelty items instead of computers. I am hoping that Microsoft has learned and will do what Google should be doing this fall. Only time will tell, but if big M sees the gap and fills it, we will have a new market leader in a couple of years

Sorry but Microsoft will take the phone/tablet market when Google and Apple both die. That's the only way they'll get the market share. Windows on a phone/tablet offers NOTHING over Android or iOS and has many of the same pitfalls. Will X game run on X phone/tablet? Can I load things from outside of the MS garden?

I have not look into windows tablet too much for fear of what I might find. I was really hoping for a stripped down windows and ability to install drivers and use ms office.

Very basic things like good word processing and connecting to printers easily are what is holding tablets back

You'll be able to use office, but MS is putting the kaibash on a lot of 3rd party apps. We've already heard no firefox, and they just recently changed their stance on putting their own Office on ARM based tablets. These people scare me....a lot. And it's not because they don't know what they're doing....it's because they do.

I didn't think the Surface for Windows RT (NVIDIA Tegra-based ARM chip) could run Office...

Surface for Windows 8 PRO (Intel core i5 chip) can run "pure" Windows software but expect to pay top dollar for that tablet... borderline laptop prices imo.

After the initial uproar I guess MS just caved and in either case Win8 sucks pretty hard. I hate the ribbon interface and I really can't stand the Metro thing they have going on . I mean they pretty much lifted it wholesale from Unity and I never really cared for Unity. But of course the next generation of MS fanboys will declare it a win and yet again deny Linux or Apple for giving MS it's foundations...ugh

lol @ foundations...

Microsoft: "We invented GUI"
Apple: "We invented GUI"
Xerox PARC: "Seriously? Pfft, biters."

I would suggest you visit the Nexus 7 forum. I don't think I've ever seen so many happy dances over a product. I love mine! You will have a tough time finding one right now because they are sold out all over the place. There is an 8G $199 an a 16G $249.

I wanted to revisit this thread after I had a bit of time to play with my Nexus 7. I have had it for a week as of today and I haven't really been able to put it down. It's an amazingly solid device and well worth more money than they are charging for it. I would strongly suggest getting one if you are in the market for a solid tablet.
