i see there are some backup apps in the Store but then I read reviews about them not working.. Can it just be done manually via connection to computer? There's really just one app I want to back up in case there is ever an update to it that breaks it.

All of your purchased apps are connected to your Google account so you won;t lose the app itself. If you want to backup your app data, the best was to do backups is with the Titanium backup app but you need to be rooted. Another option is the Helium backup app which doesn't require root. It works.

Lastly, some apps will work if you just drag all of your folders from your phone to your computer but I can;t guarantee it will work.

Thanks. I forgot about the google backup. Even so, I want to avoid google backing up an updated version of the app that may not work anymore (the way I want it to). I don't want to root so I'll check out Helium. Thanks again

I have only ever used Titanium, but if you're rooted, it's a great option. I've got it scheduled for automated backups and have used it for recovery and have no issues.
