Anyone have any recommendations on a car dock for the Droid Turbo?

I'm coming from a Droid 4, and was used to having a custom fit dock with simple one hand operation.

I have the second one he linked to. My DT fits in there with a case. Pretty snug, but I am happy.

After going through many car docks over the years, my favorite by far:

Amazon.com: Kenu Airframe - Portable Smartphone Car Mount - Black: Cell Phones & Accessories

Minimal and holds it perfectly in your cars vent. For my car that puts it at the perfect height without having to stick something on your dash.

I would recommend getting the phablet one in case you upgrade in the future to a larger phone:

Amazon.com: Kenu Airframe+ Car Mount for Phablets: Cell Phones & Accessories

As a side note, I haven't tested the non-phablet one with the Turbo + case. It works fine with the Turbo without a case. So if you have a case, go with the phablet airframe.

I consider a dock to be something with a charging port. These solutions are mounts/cradles. That said, I skipped the car dock for my current Moto X, and I use the iOttie recommended above. I vouch for the fantastic suction power! My previous mount had a suction cup that failed every time the temp got down to 40 degrees, and it would fall off occasionally in any condition.

I third the iottie. I have used the same one for years without issue. Even fits the turbo in the defender case.

I have about four Kenus that I've tried using with the Droid Maxx. I'm not sure it's a great idea for the Turbo, for the same reason: the weight. It puts a lot of strain on the vents, and you have to be careful to place the phone so that the volume buttons aren't hitting the frame. They work great with iPhones, though.

I have an Airdock Qi charging dock as well - I'm not sure I can recommend that one. It uses magnets and a tacky surface to hold the phone. It worked great on the Maxx with the Griffin Reveal case, but not so well on the Kevlar back of the phone by itself. You also have to place the phone just right on the dock. That said, it's kind of cool to always charge the phone without plugging a cable in.

Well, I guess I've tried a lot of docks...

With the iOttie docks there is plenty of space to plug in a cable when you want to charge.

I for one hope a good Qi dock comes soon that uses a microUSB to power it since I have one wired into my car under a pocket.

I love my iOttie 3. Very low profile and holds Turbo snuggly

It's not a real car dock unless it:
Charges the phone.
Puts the phone in car mode.
Is compatible with a 17mm ball mount, or at least something that fits an AMPS pattern plate.

I have 2 dash mounts with AMPS pattern plates. On one I have a 17MM ball for my Garmin. On the other I have a 14.2mm ball that more or less fits the Droid Maxx dock (14.7mm) with some help. I miss the days when Motorola made their own car docks before Google bought them. They all worked well, and fit the same 17mm ball that most devices use for mounting. Back then, I had 2 17mm ball mounts. There are a lot of car specific mounting options out there that work well. Suction cups and vent mounts are not needed as long as the dock uses a standard ball mount, or something compatible with an AMPS hole pattern.

Eventually Android Auto will eliminate the need for a car dock for the phone. That will be nice. I'm tired of going through this game every time I upgrade. I use the old phone in the existing dock until a new dock is available. That's what I'm doing now. I switched my Droid Maxx to my secondary line, and it provides my functions in the car while the Droid Turbo does the rest on my primary number.

It's a real car dock for me. I'm gonna go give iOttie a treat after those hurtful words. Lol

I just picked up the TYLT VU for my night stand. Great quality and design. I would imagine this would be the same.

Ok, I get you're wanting all that, but I just need something to hold the phone while I drive. Plugging in from a cable when necessary (I only do so when the phone is under 80%, so I don't want something that always charges anyway) is fine with me, and I just wrap a usb cable around the base of my mount. Special car modes just aren't required for me anymore since touchless controls ("ok Google now, open play music", "ok Google now, call my wife", "ok Google now, navigate to Starbucks" all work great with little to no touching of the screen required, though for some reason, navigating does require that last touch to have it start.)

The Airdock does use a standard ball mount, by the way. I don't know which size, but it was the same as the Motorola bionic dock, because I had to start using the suction cup mount from my old bionic dock when I ruined the one that came with the Airdock. Because it has magnets, you can also get the droid maxx into car mode if you place it on the Airdock just right, and still have it charge (though it can be tricky, too.)

That reminds me - has anybody found if placing a magnet somewhere on the back of the turbo starts a car dock or desktop dock mode, as it does on the maxx when you place a magnet on the back across from the volume buttons?

its not a car dock without the charger and how it changes the phone to "car mode".. you just want a cradle or a dunkin donuts mug with some double sided tape lol

I am using an "Air Dock" with a CD adapter. Turbo sticks to it like magic and it has Qi charging.

This x100 ^^^^^

Don't need a special overpriced car dock with special modes when you've got a phone as advanced as the Turbo. The Moto Assist app knows when you're driving and does all this for you...touch free.
