Recovering deleted pictues

I deleted some pictures on my phone accidentally. I've tried some of the recovery software out there (Photo Recovery, Recuva, and some others) and they all recover a few very old pictures that were deleted a long time ago, but they completely fail to find any of the more recent deleted pictures. I was wondering why this should be, and if anyone had any suggestions for recovering pictures when the above software doesn't work.
