Recurrent issue with erratic screen response

Hi-
I've got a Moto G7 that I like, with the exception of one problem that irritates me to no end.
Frequently, my touch screen gets very erratic - both the keyboard (e.g., not responding correctly to what I type or swipe), and icons. By default, I use Gboard. I've cleared the cache many times when this arises, and have rebooted. The other day, I cleared the data from GBoard as well. Sometimes I temporarily switch to a different keyboard. The interval of this happening seems to vary, but I have not kept track. I've found it difficult to successfully Google this problem - usually the hits I get do not sound like the same issue I am experiencing.

Does anyone have any input or suggestions?

Do you have a screen protector on?

I'd suggest Safe Mode, but considering how intermittent the problem is, it would still probably be difficult to determine: https://support.motorola.com/us/en/solution/MS135872?linkId=70832214

I do not have a screen protector. Thanks for the response and the link. At some point in the past, I tried safe mode to diagnose but never came to a conclusion. Would you suspect that another app is the culprit?

It could be a 3rd party app, especially if it has the ability to Draw Over Other Apps (what used to be called Screen Overlay). You can see which apps have that ability by going to ​Settings>Apps>Advanced>Special App Access.

Oh, interesting. I see an option for Display Over Other Apps, but not Draw Over Other Apps. Would that be it? If so, there are a bunch of apps listed.

Thanks. I disabled that feature on a few apps. I'll see if the issue continues to arise.

I started uninstalling apps and restarting. Eventually I did a factory reset and installed some, but not all of, the apps I had. I'm now experiencing the same issue.

Did the problem actually go away in Safe Mode? I realize it can be hard to tell if the problem doesn't happen right away, or if it's relatively infrequent.

I'm not sure. It wasn't occurring when I was booting into safe mode, but then again it didn't start up for some days after I did a factory reset on the phone. This is tricky.
