Oh, yeah. You're gonna want to root first. Backup everything with Titanium and then do the HTC dev unlock. If you're not familiar with the HTC dev unlock -- it resets your phone. So do a Titanium backup first and then go back and unlock and flash the custom recovery.

Edit:
Actually, you don't have to root first. I should have said: If you have already rooted your phone then be sure to do a Titanium backup before you do the HTC dev unlock.

And it looks like we have another recovery option out now. TWRP, which is a touch based recovery, just went live also.
