Reinstall Play store?

First... my phone is rooted.

Yesterday my play store was returning an error any time I tried to download any app or update any app. "Unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped." Following the advice found through searching the forums, I went in to settings/application manager and cleared the data/cache for the play store and rebooted. That didn't fix it. Repeated process "uninstalling updates" on the second pass. No luck. Cleared info in the neighboring 'google play services' or something like that. still no luck.

Next is where I think my real problem started. I uninstalled the play store and play services. I've reinstalled the play store via an 4.027 apk download. The first time I open google play after installing, it loads to the main screen and I'm able to search for apps. If in download and app it hangs and says
"Unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped."

Every time I attempt to open the play store after that it immediately hangs and then delivers the same message: "Unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped."

I've attempted installing 4.027, 4.025, 4.026. I've done a factory reset on the phone. Still "Unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped."

I'm starting to think I may have deleted some other google service that was integral to the play store working.

FYI... nothing is disabled in the app manager.

Any ideas?

The following Google items are listed in my application manager. Maybe something is missing?
Google Account Manager
Google Backup Transport
Google Calendar Sync
Google Contacts Sync
Google Partner Setup
Google Play Books
Google Play Magazines
Google Play Movies & TV
Google Play Services
Google Play Store
Google Search
(another) Google Search
Google Services Framework
Google Text-to-speech Engine
Google Plus

Google Play Services and Google Play Store both appear under the downloaded tab. None of the others appear there. Do I need to get them to not appear as downloaded apps?

You may need to flash stock ROM. Seems like you've tried everything. I've had issues with gapps before and they've always seemed to fix themselves in a reboot. Seems like this is your final resort. I'm not sure what carrier you have but here's the link with all the instructions to go back to stock for AT&T. If you are using another model, check the other carrier S4 threads for instructions.

My guess would be reflash the stock firmware. That would put everything back that needs to be there. And that's also why I only freeze applications. Never delete them. Too much risk involved. Lol. Hope u get it figured out man.

Follow the procedure.

Also, since you're new to this, don't mess with core applications unless you know what you're doing. We've all been there before and just wanted to warn you. I've bricked devices and brought them back from the dead but it mostly happened when I did something I should not have been doing or didn't follow directions closely enough. If you have some issues, search around thoroughly before uninstalling if you do not know what the consequences are. Use titanium back to backup your apps so if you delete them, you can easily restore them in case you need to. Sometimes backing up, uninstalling then reinstalling helps. I've deleted apps in the past that affected the entire system and DID NOT have a back up so it became a real pain. So learn from my mistakes LOL. Just a friendly tip and good luck.

Here's a thread that was started a couple weeks ago in the S3 forum. You may have seen it already but if not, look through it as well

Ha... for sure. I thought "Google can't be an important core app".

I'm finishing up flashing the stock rom. I'll report back with my success or failure.

What the......

So, I flashed back to the stock firmware. After it booted it downloaded some updates. After the reboot I tested.... I STILL GET THE SAME ERROR?!?!

That is really weird. I've had that problem mostly in the past with gmail and reboot usually fixed and if it didn't uninstall/reinstall did. Have you tried all the solutions in the previous link I posted? Seems that users have fixed it several ways and appear to be different for different users. Check all your GAPPS as well and clear cache just in case.

Good luck.

I tried all of those ways.

OKAY, so after the flash, I did a factory reset. Now I can load Play store but I'm back to getting "Package file is invalid" when I try to get any app from the play store.

Edit... the last error was caused by my phone connecting directly to an att wifi hotspot in my building that wasn't letting it truly get to the internet. Reconnected to a good wifi point and all looks to be working!

Maybe now try to clear the cache in app settings or remove your google account and set it back up and see if that does the trick.

Thanks and sorry... I edited my above post before seeing your reply. I did clear the cache- after reconnecting to a good wifi all is well with the world. My phone auto-connected to an att wifi hotspot in the building and it was blocking some ports or something (when opening a browser I was presented with a ATT hotspot sign up webpage)

Well glad you got it working. Keep ODIN nearby LOL.
