Reluctantly leaving Windows Phone

Greetings everyone. As an "all in" Windows guy, I'm typing this intro on my back up Lumia 640 as I prepare to take my family in a new mobile direction. I've been on WP since 7.0 when I was seeking a replacement for my Palm Pre Plus. Now after dropping my 950 and finding out fixing it would cost as much as replacing it, I've decided I can't see spending the money on another only to keep saying "I wish I had that app". So I'm saying goodbye to Windows Central and hello to Android Central.

I live in a suburb of Chicago with my wife and daughter. I consider myself a tech enthusiast but friends would probably say Microsoft junkie is a better description.

I'm looking at the Moto Z2 Force for myself (loss too many phones to our tile floors) and the Moto Z2 Play for my wife. My daughter will eventually get the Moto G5 Plus (or G5S Plus) once I learn more about parental controls on Android. I plan on leaving my folks on WP for now. I like the idea of Moto's approach to a more stripped down version of Android but still adding in a few extra features. I also want to keep us on the same flavor of Android since I'm the default tech trouble shooter and learning one version of the OS will be challenge enough. I'm on insider builds on everything (PCs, phone, Xbox) but I don't plan on rooting any of the new phones.

I would love advice on apps, especially for email, parental controls and podcasts. My wife and I share each others calendars and we have a family calendar that includes our daughter, so we'd like to continue using our outlook.com calendars. We're not really in the Google ecosystem at all currently with the exception of a Chromebook my daughter's high school requires. I myself just recently started using Chrome for my browser so this will truly be a new experience.

I'm looking forward to being part of the community and to our Android adventures ahead.

You can keep on using your Outlook accounts. Windows has several apps on the Play Store (analogous to Windows Marketplace). If you so prefer you can use the Outlook app which can handle email, contacts, and calendar in one app, much like Outlook for Windows.

Welcome to the forums. As for parental controls, I am not sure what to suggest. I can try to see what I can find, though.

All your need is a Google account to get started.

Then download all of the Microsoft apps your need and you'll be set.

@Ry I actually set one up the other day when I started using Chrome on my PC. Is it normal for replies not to show under the comment that your replying to?

Welcome aboard and enjoy Android....and I say that from my Lumia 930. 🙂

Regarding your point above, are you referring to use of the AC website on a PC? If so, I almost never use it myself so am not sure what you mean. I prefer to use the AC Forums mobile app on Android devices, which is another app recommend for you. :)

On WP I use mTalk or, as right now, Tapatalk.

I am using the website for now, since I don't have the phone yet. I'm looking at grabbing the Moto Z2 Force releasing this week.

Welcome to Android Central and to the world of Android! WP is awesome but I certainly understand your "if I only had that app" concern.

Motorola is a great way to go, especially for your first round with Android. Keeping the manufacturer in the family is also a good idea; but don't feel like you can't branch out to other brands! You sound very familiar with technology and Android does not take much to get used to. In a few days' time, I'm sure you'll figure out the how-to's and tricks!

I don't really know much about parental controls but I'm pretty sure Android has something for that in the phone's security/privacy settings in the Settings app. And Chrome or other browser apps will most likely have similar.

Also, the Play series is so unique and awesome. The Moto Z Play was awesome and the Z2 Play is great too. I hear they come with a smaller battery but there's a mod for that!

Welcome aboard, and please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. Also, feel free to hop on over to the Motorola subsection to ask device-specific questions about the three phones you're considering.

Yes.

Use the quote feature instead of mentions.

Great thanks, I'll get the hang of this eventually! I never used the Windows Central website, I always use the app. I should have the new phone tomorrow, I assume the Android Central app shows replies in line?

@CaymanDreamin: WinPhn was great but lost its market. I believe Google+Windows
could create a phone like Goo-Wind Phn: Even further make agreement with iOS to
share data & even think to create a shared "Public phone" for pedestrians. I'd used.!
Oops! Forgetting welcome to ACentral.com

Worst decision I ever made, however necessary. If Microsoft ever pulls their head out of their but on mobile I will be back in a heart beat. Android is an annoying inferior system. A few apps I grew to love on windows are not here. The allternatice are either not as user friendly or much more expensive as they are subscriptions rather than 1 time payments. While maybe more customizable in some regards, not as easily or thoroughly customizable as windows (really no dark theme throughout the OS? You need at least three app to get that, and you lose other customizable option to do it).
