Remind me why I went with a NEXUS

The only plan I would do with tmobile is the prepaid.

The plan I would use would be be 59.99 prepaid with 2gb. I need the unlimited minutes more than the extra data.

The savings is just too severe for me not to try out the gsm version. Since I live in a large city it appears that I am covered very well. The other times will be a day pass with at&t when I'm on the road or traveling. I will use my google voice number on those occasions.

Updates that are quick and cheaper service really interest me.

Tmobile really needs to do a marketing blitz to get the word out about their prepaid pricing. The should also offer a roaming day pass like at&t.

Before you sign up for a 2 year T-Mobile contract, try a month of prepaid to ensure you get the connections/speed you desire. I tried the $30 for 100 minutes, unlimited text, 5GB data. This is the "Walmart" plan, so you need to order the sim for $0.99 from T-Mobile online, and activate it online - otherwise you will not see this plan option (if it interests you).

WOW why does this not feel like a big FU to Google from VZW. Canada has updated the Nexus to 4.1. Hmmmmmm

I think it'd be easier to spend 10 minutes and root the damn thing than change carriers and buy a new phone. I don't understand why anyone would wait for the "official" update when it's been out for so long. What's so great about the "official" update? It's gonna be the same exact thing! And you can't just say "don't start with the root comments" and expect people to leave you alone about it. That's like saying "I'm so sick and tired of my house being so dark all the time, I think I'm just gonna buy a new house, and don't start with the "turn your lights on" comments."

Yes, they can.

That's why we have a thread to centralize all the root talk you'd like. We'd rather not every one of these threads become that same old argument :)

Well said, SamO. Don't buy a Nexus if you don't want to root. Get a frickin SGSIII with a locked bootloader to let VZW know you value them protecting your phone from you.

I bought a GNex on VZW for the fastest network and the best software (via developers).

These comments aren't valid, and I'm asking kindly again, please centralize all the root discussion you want either in the thread I linked to or in the rooting subforum. Thanks!

Nah its not.

I cant even explain how the idea of rooting this thing makes me nauseous. I literally was about to give it a go and then I went to the GSM forum. They have had JB like 2nd week of July AND you can pay from $30-60$ flat + tax monthly!!!!!!!!! That was the straw the broke the camels back for me. All she wrote. Its literally less that half for what I pay at Verizon. Yeah and you do get HALF of the 4g speed on Tmobile but I could care less, 7MB down is plenty for me as I watch TV and movies on my actually television.

Im still testing out the GSM on Tmobile in NYC but so far so good. Sprint getting the update in advance of Verizon was it for me. Im not ardently against rooting as some are, I just don't wanna be bothered with unlocking and then locking it back and then rooting, blah. I would much rather play Squash or Basketball or watch the Walking Dead or Sons of Anarchy or watch the US OPEN.....ANYTHING but messing around with my phone. Lord knows I would be the guy to brick the damn thing.

FYI, Verizon FIOS isn't coming to my neighborhood where I live and my time Warner cable box has pixelization issues and guess what...I plan to move because of it.

So the advantage I saw was no longer having to wait for OS updates. You have to be F&^king kidding that we are now waiting 3+ months for the update and Sprint already has it as well. Do not start with the root comments. You should not have to root a Nexus device to have the latest OS.

So here is what I am thinking. Either leaving Verizon and going with a Nexus from the Play store, or if I am going to stay on VZW, switching to the Razr Maxx HD.

What are your thoughts, also the price point that Google has chosen for the GSM model on the play store is 300 dollars less than VZW's CDMA Nexus w/o a contract pricing. That way you can break a contract, buy a phone and choose a new carrier and still be paying less than buying a phone on VZW's network.

CUSTOM ROM. Say it with me. CUSTOM ROM. I have had Jelly Bean since July and am using a custom Jelly Bean variant now I love and is as good if not better peformance wise than the iPhone 4S (and I dare say 5 based on what I saw yesterday). Not to mention, I can customize this beast to my heart's content. Yes, Verizon ed up some of the key features that make a Nexus, well....a Nexus, but the Android hacking and Custom ROM community is helpful, welcome, and great at coming up with ways to get the latest and greatest immediately. JB ROMs for this phone were coming out (ports at least) a few days after JB was announced at I/O. If you have not done CUSTOM ROMs yet, you are missing out on what this phone can REALLY do and why many Android enthusiasts love it.

The purpose of this forum was not to discuss rather I could root or not. Its the fact that Verizon still has not released Jelly Bean for the Galaxy Nexus and we are going on what feels like 3 months. This was acceptable when I had my Droid X 2 or Droid 3. I went with the Nexus because I wanted the latest and greatest, we should not have to wait this long for the update on a Google device. The truth of the matter is the Verizon Google Nexus is not a true Nexus device and I guess we will never have a true Google device on Verizon :(

Feels like 3... but its been in their hands for testing less than 2. It will come soon. :)

According to my research anything outside of an unlocked GSM phone will NEVER ever ever get updates quickly and not have something that the carrier stuck on it. The fact that Google Wallet has to be side loaded (therefore does not receive updates properly) is also VERY annoying. If they wanna have their alternative, just offer it in addition to the Google Wallet, just don't block anything or add anything at all to the phone.

If rooting was as simple and painless as side loading OR a program was available that did the whole root and unlock process with just the push of a button then I would have been the first one to root and unlock.

There is no way in the world I'm waiting 2-3 months for verizon every time Google pushes an update.

This isn't a thread about rooting, but since you brought it up, just thought I'd let you know about this tool that seems close to what you're describing:

I saw that or similar program but when I checked it out something wasn't right. I think people were having problem with it as I recall.

"you should not have to"... is just idealism.

rooting and romming is painless.

This isn't going to be a workable solution as phones used in business settings come under mangement and/or restriction. BYOD policies and enforcement tools are getting more sophisticated and corp IT shops are going to be locking the heck out of anything connecting to corp IT resources. This is happening soon where I work and we've been told - No root, no ROMs.

That means for folks like us who want the latest and greatest Android (and use it in corp IT environments), this answer won't be viable much longer. Picking the right device to get your updates will be -very- important.

You have the right device.. the Nexus will still receive updates to new versions of Android before ANY other Verizon phone. :)

Still waiting for Jelly Bean. Still.... Again what good is having a Nexus device on VZW?

Honestly I feel you.. But this complaint is that of a spoiled kid. vzw, Gnex, JB before 99% of every other phone... Win.. Win.. Win..
.... Like everyone has said... Most phones don't have ICS or just got it... You will have Jelly Bean... right now Verizon is focused on keeping the Damn thing with a signal then getting you jelly bean.(GNEX signal updates are days away per vzw)
... If you have Verizon understand they do things slow to assure that it's right.... Also you said you shouldn't have to root it? Partially true... Nexus use to mean unlocked boot loader because the intent is to root...so You got a sports car but you live in Manhattan...fyou knew the speed limit when you bought it.... Aka Verizon

Change to another carrier and you will have jelly bean with poor service.... Just saying....

And getting a Motorola and your complaint is an update?.... I'm really confused... The razr just got ics like 45days ago.... After being told Feb 2012 was the time frame at its launch...

Options :
1.root install jelly bean and be happy... When the official hits unroot and update

2.Get the Moto and you will have jelly bean next year sometime

3.Switch carriers for a phone that's gonna be replaced in 3 months by the next Nexus and have less service than Verizon offers

4.Just chill

I think knowing its out makes you want it now.... But Verizon has checks and balances they do home work on everything.... That's how they got a jump on LTE vs wimaxx and whatever else failed in the mobile 4g world...

NO disrespect intended.. Honestly I understand

Dood,

Dump verizon and go GSM. I just did and it was a great decision.

I turned on the GSM Nexus and it updated to Jellybean in 5 mins when I got it.

My bill is $60 flat pre paid, no other charges.....Versus $130 all in with verizon.

I got 7-8 down which is plenty, I cant tell the difference in speed.

Verizon didn't even charge me to break the contract.

I am selling my old Verizon on Ebay and expect to get $270. I paid $390 (taxes) for the new one. I am saving $70 a month so I make up the difference in a few months.

I will get updates as soon as they are ready to come out and I dont have to worry about my bill ever changing. I am also looking at potentially lowering my bill ever further $50 a month and can change providers when I want and how often I want.

I will say this. Tmobile in my area is great and at&t is awful. One of those services must work and work well for a switch to make sense.

I am done with Verizon and Sprint for good and ANY contract service for the rest of my life.....The most annoying thing about Verizon was them blocking Google Wallet and now Wallet works just fine.

You still pick and choose...Ur plan is a fix for today... But when a brand new phone comes out and you want it... $500-$700

When your phone malfunctions... No instant replacement... Sit and wait for Samsung or htc..if it's under warranty if not... $500-$700

When it get broke or stolen S.O.L and I hope you didn't just buy it if that happens.....$500-$700

Hey if you can afford it great but if you can afford you wouldn't be unhappy about the $130 bill...
Hell you can root and brick a phone... If you have insurance say you lost it and pay $100 for a replacement...
Just disclosing that that life of prepaid in the smartphone world is a risky and lonely one.

Understand the service we get with a contract... It cost but it also pays...
