This might have been posted for the Evo already, but I haven't found it.

Is there a way to remove the apps that are pre-installed or embedded with upgrades?

Kinda a bummer that I can't remove all these apps I don't care to have on my phone.

Thanks

Yes in order to change these applications you would need to root your phone , which means you gain super user access to the phone. you would then need to get an explorer program such as Root explorer and rename the apk files.

you do not want to delete these files incase you need to get at them again or if they serve other functions critical to the operating system that you are unaware of.

if you choose to root your phone we have many resource on the forums to help you along with lists of applications that are safe and unsafe to remove.

I deleted the new Blockbuster, Nova, Kindle, etc just this evening by using the instructions in this post ... once I downloaded Root Explorer and did a nandroid backup, it took literally less than a minute to remove those plus Nascar and a few other widgets I don't use.

these are the apps i'm looking to remove, i guess i got some reading to do, i read some on rooting but seemed kinda complicated to me. thanks everyone for the quick responses.

I just re-rooted my phone (lost it when I applied the Froyo OTA update) Saturday morning. Found the easiest method was to roll back to a rootable method of 2.1 Eclair (see the sticky on it) so I didn't have to worry about the new HBOOT versions. Then I rooted using Unrevoked 3.21 and things worked great.

I got a little more adventurous today with removing some of the stock apps - specifically Nascar, Blockbuster, Nova, Kindle, and widgets associated with some of the stock programs. Really easy. If you can get rooted, removing the bloatware is super simple. I would suggest reading the entire sticky I listed previously, as it is pretty detailed on which apps you DO NOT want to remove (FriendStream, Stocks, News, Peep, etc).

There are several ways. One of them is to use Platinum Backup (in Market). It has a 'freeze' command that hides selected apps.

I'm working on an app that will "freeze" any app, even apps that other programs have trouble with (like titanium backup cannot seem to freeze Amazon MP3 no matter what) with a single click. It will be simple and to the point and should be done within the next couple of days (around Christmas).

NOTE: If you simply delete an apk, you will NOT be able to get OTA updates in the future unless you made a backup and reload them back onto your phone. There is NO way around this other than doing a complete factory reset, I learned this the hard way with the latest OTA update when it would NOT come to my phone no matter and found out it was failing because Sprint put in a check to check if all bloatware was still installed. "Freezing" apps is the only way to keep pre-installed bloatware from running and being shown and still get OTA updates.

I am writing this app for the people that want this feature that is in Titanium Backup, but dont want to pay $6 just to get it.

I'm going to need some beta testers before I submit to the market so PM me if you are interested, you will need root of course, but even the z4root temporary root or whatever method mentioned in the link above will work fine.

This is great news for all your members here this needs its own thread so once you are ready to start getting testers together please make a new thread. I'm excited to see how it works.

Later,
Dave
