Ok so my one click root went fine and I did the clockwork recovery in the stickys and that went easy too. Basically I'm just playing with rooting to see if it works because wanna remove the bloat mainly try to get longer battery life. Removing the bloat didn't seem to help any, but that's not the issue. When 2.2 becomes available I know I will have to restore the bloat the unroot but what about the clockwork recovery? How stock will my phone have to be? Thanks!

Nobody knows for sure. If you have cwm someone will make a flashable zip, no need to worry about the OTA

what NOsquid sez. really no need to go back to stock ever, unless you want to for the fun and learning of it. wait for somebody to make a custom 2.2 ROM. forget about OTAs.

Based on previous updates, the only thing you need to have exactly the same as stock is your system/app folder. I was able to get DI01 OTA by copying my bloatware files back to it, installing, then moving them back to my SD card. Superuser was still in my app drawer, but I didn't have root access after the update. Just had to root again. It didn't change a thing with CWM or apps requiring root. Now they could have totally different requirements for 2.2 since it's a much larger update, but I wouldn't worry about it. It's just easier to flash it via Odin once it's released and someone posts it here or on xda then going through the hassle to get your phone in the state to get it their way.

Ok guys thanks i guess its a wait and see game, I wanna try a custom ROM soon and apply the gps fix but I don't wanna get too heavy into hacking this phone if I have to reverse anything. Btw all my bloatware is in a folder on my sd card in case I have to move it back.

The more I read about rooting, the more I contemplate just flashing with CyanogenMod or something along those lines. Bare in mind, I don't have an Android phone yet, but will soon enough. These popular roms, that are worked on by a lot of people and updated relatively frequently, seem more appealing than dealing with VZW's OS updates.

That being said... what about the bug fixes and whatnot that I hear about getting released? I thought I've read that from time to time a phone will have a bug fix sent out to fix the GPS, or something else. How would I get those types of updates? I mean, does the new ROM such as CyanogenMod take care of tweaking bugs in the phone from the manufacturer?

The DJ05 update is the one you're thinking of for the GPS fix. It still is not officially released yet but there are ways you can get your hands on the benefits. You can either get the gpssetup file from another post on these forums and apply it to your DI01 system, or download a rom/kernel/modem that's based on leaked DJ05 code like a lot of people have done. I personally have gone both routes and they work great. It's just a matter if you want the other features of a DJ05 rom/theme.

Well, I'm thinking along the lines of if I were to flash with CyanogenMod and kept up with its updates... would I need to go about finding a way to get the DJ05 update, or another hardware type of update of its kind? Or do the CyanogenMod updates take care and incorporate in these fixes too?

I'm not real familiar with the details on CyanogenMod so I don't know what update code they base their ROM on (DI01 vs DJ05) but you can apply the gps fix either way. If their ROM is based on DJ05, which you'll see in your Settings > About Phone screen after installing it, you would still be able to use the DJ05 modem and kernel like I said in my last post. If its DI01, which I'd guess it is, you can just get the gpssetup.apk from the DJ05 update and install it on you're system. You'll still be on DI01 according to your phones version numbers, but have the benefits of DJ05. To follow that, if the developers of CyanogenMod are any bit frequent with their updates, they'll have a DJ05 version for sure when it's officially released from VZ.

As it stands, CyanogenMod isn't available for the Fascinate (and probably won't be until we recieve 2.2). But I would suggest rooting, flashing CWM, and going the custom ROM route, as th developers of those ROMs will apply any updates that Verizon pushes out

I don't want to unroot so I will just wait for a custom 2.2 ROM.
