Repairing rooted bloatware-cleaning silliness

Sooo, I have a Droid X2 running 2.3.4 from OTA, and I rooted it so that I could try and clear up some of this bloatware taking up my RAM all the time, like Slacker and Skype. I was following a guide I found on another forum, but it was meant for the Droid 3, not the X2.

The guide said it was fine to remove the Messages and Messaging apps, as long as you had a third-party SMS app installed. This has proven to be incorrect, as I can no longer receive SMS or MMS messages!

How do I repair this?

(By the way, to answer the inevitable question of why I removed the apps instead of simply freezing them, the short answer is because I'm stupid and OCD. :P)

what program did you use to delete the messaging app with. Titanium backup has a restore option if you backed up first. you can find the Mms.apk by downloading 2.3.4 and unzipping it. use a program like root explorer or esfile explorer and push it to sys/apps and checking permissions. permissions are rw- r-- r--

I used Titanium Backup, but I didn't make any backups because I think that's a donate feature. >_>;

So, I guess my next step is to find the 2.3.4 zip, or gziptar, or whatever it is. Thanks!

I might post again asking for help if I can't find it. <_<; but I'm pretty good at finding things on the interwebs.

You can backup just have to do it manually. You have to pay to schedule backups. I attached the mms apk in my first reply

Oh! Eheh. See, I said I was dumb. Thanks Mr. One 2! Now hopefully I can figure this next process out, hehe...

Not dumb I just edited my post w link. I use es file explore and you have to go into settings and check root explorer and mount file system. Download my link from ur phone browser. Open es and find the file should be in downloads. Unzip it. Long press it and click move to. Hit the star and press phone. Scroll down to system and click that. Should have app folder right there. Open that. Hit the little tab and click the mms file. Reboot and it should show up. If not go back into es explorer and system/app find the mms apk you moved there long press and scroll to properties. Click permissions. And change them to what I posted and reboot again.

Well, thanks to your instructions I got it installed and working! Thanks so much! ^-^

No problem... glad it worked cuz I'm wasted and had no idea what I was talking about... jk jk, now backup with titanium and you'll be all good!!!!

Hehe. Is there any way to configure this app? I don't seem to have messaging settings under my settings anymore, and I'm getting double notifications with this and ChompSMS...

Titanium will back up, but restoring is one app at a time with the free version.

I never freeze apps, I just uninstall, but I make a backup after every uninstall lol

That messaging apk is from my phone which is running eclipse which is d-blurred. Maybe that's why it doesn't have a settings.... you may have to find the stock mms.apk and load it same way as you just did the one I posted. As far as dual notifications go when you do get your settings back, turn off notifications in the menu, and I read if you turn off the download automatically box that will stop them too

Edit: it seems that since my mms is from another rom the settings won't show cuz they have a different framework. Sorry bout that! But at least you will know how to push apps to the system now!!

Hehe, yep. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to find a copy of the 2.3.4 base packages for my phone, or something. It seems to work well enough anyway; I can even use the enter key on my bluetooth keyboard to send, which was the whole reason I was using Chomp -anyway-.

Eheh, this was a "things it's safe to remove" guide. :x I knew better than to just start uninstalling things, but I'm stupid and OCD and hated having the things in my list (which is why I didn't freeze) and I thought backing stuff up was a paid function of Titanium Backup... (obviously, I know better now)

RSDLite, huh? I was looking at that earlier. Feel a little over my head, though...

Since you're already rooted, why not just install a ROM that's debloated already?

This is a really good all in one thread for getting everything you need.

But basically, install system recovery from link, download ROM from one of the links and place it on your sd card... Run and install system recovery, then from recovery install zip from sd card and navigate to the ROM zip file and install zip. After that's done make sure you clear data/cache/Davlik and then reboot all from recovery. Voila!
