Repeating notifications

Does anyone know how to get notifications (such as email) to notify only once and not over and over? If I don't open email it it keeps giving me my notification sound every 10 minutes or so. This drives people in my house crazy if I forget to turn on vibrate mode before going to bed.

I have never had this issue. Are you sure emails are only getting forwarded to your phone once?
