Reporting Issues to Google

How's this for a problem...

When on a call and you're on battery power using either the speaker phone or the supplied earbuds, after the screen times out (goes to black) there is no way to bring the screen back. If you press the power button, your call is disconnected. This is not an issue when the phone is on the charger or if you're just holding the phone up to your ear, but when you're on battery power using the earbuds or speakerphone, it's a BIG issue.

I was on a 3-way conference call today on the battery using the earbuds that are supplied with the phone. At the end of the call, I wanted to drop one of the parties but I couldn't get my screen to come back on. When I pressed the power button, I disconnected everyone.

I reported it to Samsung's Level 3 dedicated support for the Nexus S and they have opened a "severe" trouble ticket. Hopefully this can be addressed quickly.

UPDATE: I just reported this to Google as recommended: Issue 13556 - android - Nexus S - after screen times out, you can;t bring it back when using speakerphone or earbuds - Project Hosting on Google Code

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Thanks for making the report. It's updated in the OP. If anyone else is having this problem, or any others that are reported, please visit the links and star them!

Oh it's not just me. Sumsung has already confirmed it and that Google needs to make an update to Gingerbread for the NS.

I went back to Best Buy. We tested two other phones (as well as the demo) and all three did the same thing.

I was on the phone with three Samsung Techs on a conference call Tuesday 12/28. They all had access to the phone (Nexus S) and they all confirmed the issue as well. Hopefully they'll get the issue escalated quickly so I patch can be released.

This is an easy fix. It is a problem with the settings not
Gingerbread. Go to your settings and then accessibilities and then uncheck the power button accessibility. It should be the last one. Tell me if this helps. If you have any other questions then please post them in my thread nexus s answers. Click it in my signature. Thanks. Hopes this helps you.

Well, that's embarrassing as all hell. First, why in the world would the default setting be to end the call when you press the power button. Second, you would think that "Level 3" service techs would have known. But then again, I should have never made an assumption.

Thanks Bancon! I wonder if there is a way to delete this from the Google Issue board?

Glad your issue is resolved, Bartman. I've taken it off the OP.

Here's a new one for everyone: NFC setting seems to create an error message when turning NFC on/off (checking and unchecking the box). Others at XDA have recreated this issue, so not sure if it's hardware related or software related. In any case, here's the filed report to Google: Issue 13581 - android - Nexus S - NFC "an error occurred" - Project Hosting on Google Code If you have similar issues with your NFC option, star the report. Thanks.

this thread is specifically about Gingerbread 2.3. Thanks.

If this thread is about Gingerbread I would think it should be in the Gingerbread forum. I know the Nexus S is the only phone with Gingerbread right now but soon other phones will get it and people will be reporting issues in the Gingerbread forum not the Nexus S forum. Maybe this thread should be posted in the Gingerbread forum. Just a suggestion.

Not sure whether this is a Google or Samsung issue, but like many people I'm not able to make it through a full day with a single battery charge.

Hopefully this is correctable with a new battery and/or identification of problem apps (e.g., somebody said Facebook was draining theirs big time).

Does anyone know if there is a definitive way for me to test whether I have a bum battery on my own, or is this something that requires special hardware

I have to say Samsung. It can be fixed by getting a better battery but i have no clue what type. It is just the battery on the Nexus most people have the same problem. I am sure someone will make a longer lasting battery for this phone. Hope this helps!

Hi, Smileman... I have a Samsung also and it has a similar problem. Here is what I found to be the most significant causes of drain on my battery, (although, not necessarily in this order!):
  1. Use of a Bluetooth headset uses a pretty good amount of the battery life... When I know I am not going to be using it for a while, I turn mine off and click the Bluetooth "B" icon off on my Home Page because it will continue to seek for Bluetooth connections if you leave it on and there are none present on your device;
  2. Set as many of your Apps to non-automatic updating... many of them are updating all day long, especially if they are sites that have items to sell on them... I set most of mine to manual updates... that way, when I enter the Android Market, any updates that are available will immediately be shown in my Home Pages notification folder and I can control which I want to update and download or not... this also saves on data charges;
  3. Games.... they use a LOT of battery, as well as eat up data if they need to access anywhere off your device... I try to do any gaming when I am near free wifi access... no data charges at least and less drain on the battery because you are closer to the source of power;
  4. INVEST IN AT LEAST ONE REALLY GREAT BATTERY/SYSTEM MONITOR. I am using System Panel (paid version) and it is fantastic... it shows just what programs are opening and transfering data and shows the system graphically as well... I also recently got 3G Watchdog... it is excellent for showing exactly how much of your data plan you are using daily, weekly and monthly and with percentages.... no LAG TIME as with your service carrier. It is also customizable;
  5. As with all batteries, you should allow it to drain COMPLETELY every once in a while... I know this is hard because the android system does NOT like to operate with a battery below 15-20% power left, but it is very good to help condition the battery by allowing it to drain all the way out or as close to that as possible every so often.
And, finally, hopefully, when Samsung releases the 2.2 version of the operating system, the issue of Apps not being accessible to your device's memory when they are loaded to your SD card will no longer cause problems with loading and time, which also drains your battery.

(P.S. - when I turned my Bluetooth device off for one whole day, I got a full 2 days of operation off of my Captivate... a very impressive increase! And I am using a BlueAnt Q1.)

Good luck to you... hope this helps.

I need to report some things to google, but I see links to specific already addressed issues, but not any general link to google for reporting new issues? I might not be seeing it?

Isn't he talking about the Nexus S on Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread.

Me neither..cant get through even a day with a single charge on my nexus s..............and i have read a lot of reviews of the nexus s stating awesome battery. For many it seems it lasted for full 2 days.

I don't use bluetooth nor do i have anything on auto update. No 3G usage either and no wifi.....so i should be getting through a day quiet easily theoretically........Well i feel the NoLED app is taking a lot of power as i noticed that once i have a missed call or message, it keeps the phone screen on with all 4 touch buttons at the bottom on too, and the phone becomes quiet hot if i don't open the phone immediately.......

And people a little help please. How do i "star" in the google issues page? I recently clicked on a link here which took me to google issues page but how do i star my poll without registering or signing in....Do i need to register?

I am sorry if my two cents aint worth even that....but baco,.... this option in settings - accessibility is not switched on by default. So even if bartman got it on by mistake and did not realize it, how come the samsung and google techies too had the same issue???? I am sure it is not switched to on by default cuz i used this option for 2 days recently and was really annoyed by this problem mentioned here that i went back and switched it off.

It's possible you may have a defective battery (or phone). If you're still within your exchange period, consider swapping it for a new one. At the very least, try swapping the battery at Best Buy. Maybe you'll run into someone nice enough to just switch the battery for you.

In general, it's a shame battery technology isn't good enough where we can use full touch screen phones without having to monitor them so closely, or disable features which are touted on Android (widgets, live wallpapers, constant updates, etc). I am really hoping there will be official Samsung batteries with higher power for the NS soon.

You can just sign in with your Gmail account. That should allow you to star. To star an issue, it's on the left hand side (next to the word "issue"). You should see an "empty" star. Just click on it.

Dont hope on that (i mean Samsung releasing high capacity batteries). Even if there is a technological breakthrough, they'd never give high capacity batteries for old devices just like that. They will launch new models with high performance batteries though, and wouldn't want to scavenge on themselves, you know.

Thank you for the advice, i'll try signing in.
