Requesting ROM Recommendations

Glad you got it working! I suppose the modified kernel was not playing nice with your stock ROM. Enjoy Baked Snack, it is (in my opinion) the best Eclair ROM out there.

Yup, so far I'm loving all the customization options! Spare parts is win. Installing some themes now. Thanks again for all your help!

To clarify: this help for jrz5024 is for him running the 2.1 Eclair version ROMs right? That setCPU app to overclock is for Eclair because Froyo source code has not been released yet?
On a seperate note, glad you got it to work jrz, I had my phone on the Samsung boot screen for a long while too. I had to restart from scratch with Odin too. I'm running the Bonsai ROM, but I'm ready to try something else.... maybe. haha

I like Baked Snack so far. Seems really fast and stable, Quadrant score went up from ~850 to ~980. Everything runs more smoothly, and more responsively overall, and a lot of the weird bugs I was having - sms messages hanging, music player crashing, etc - don't happen anymore.

Plus, I'm getting better battery life! - I got a 15% increase even after making a bunch of calls - one 45 min long, listening to stitcher radio for ~30 min and playing games / texting / etc for 1h 32m (screen on at max brightness).

@btgoodlin: keep at it man! good luck!

thanks @jrz5024 & @ragnarokx for this thread! i'm an epic newbie (former BB user) & was wondering kinda the same things (( although mostly how to make my battery last longer )) .. i do have a question though, what would be the rom/kernel runner up for best battery life after baked snack? just wondering.

Second best to Baked Snack? Hm.. many people swore by ACS's Syndicate ROM. I suppose that would be close to Baked Snack (I never used it long enough to compare personally).

I was in the same situation as you when I first rooted - I wanted better batter life than what I was getting with the stock. I went with Baked Snack and it's been great. Most people agree that it has by far the best battery life of all the 2.1 ROMS. However, it seems like his development has stopped for the time being and he hasn't developed anything for the Epic for 2.2, which is a shame.

As for the 2.2 ROMS, I haven't tried them, but from what I'm reading, the battery life isn't nearly as good as anything for 2.1.

Well so far I've been more than happy with my battery performance gains. The biggest jump in battery life is when the phone is on standby. Running stock, I typically lost 10% of battery every hour the phone was on, or ~15% / hr with heavy use (texting / playing music / web browsing). Now I lose about 7% / hr with heavy use, and only 2-3% / hr with light use! During the 4 hours my phone sat in my pocket at work last night, it only dropped from 93% to 89%.

Baked Snack is a good choice for anyone who wants a no-frills ROM that is simple, streamlined and optimized for battery life without sacrificing performance, not to mention rock-solid stable.

I was kinda waiting till more battery saving 2.2 roms came out but i think i'll give baked snack a try till 2.2 gets officially released.

Nice! That definitely sounds better than what I'm getting!

Yeah, I can say after experimenting with 2.2 roms (quantum and others, EXT4 etc) that I can't possibly use any of them because of the ridiculous battery life that 2.1 roms (bakedsnack in particular) allow.

Today my battery died after about 8-9 hours (using the latest quantum), which is not good cause I didn't have a chance to charge it. With BakedSnack I've achieved over 12 hours in similar circumstances, and longer with light use.

I really, really can't wait for custom kernels with 2.2...

Point me in the right direction

I am currently running DK28 as it installed. I rooted the phone to get the tether, and the phone is working great.

Is there a DK28 based ROM that has EXT4, that does not omit Touchwiz, and the Sprint Bloatware? I happen to like, and use the Sprint applications (other than Nascar).

Is there any way to make Touchwiz home screens support 5x5 grid layout and allow resizing of widgets? (like other launchers.) Being able to toggle off the ever present menu bar, and toggle off the home screen indicator dots would also be great. These are all options I use in Go Launcher, Zeam and Launcher Pro- if TW had some of these features, I might actually use it. That being said- not sure if it's worth the effort- but if it's easily modded- it'd be an interesting thing I've not seen in current ROMS.

Next: I have no idea if this is at the ROM level or not...nor do I know if it's fixed with the unofficial froyo update:

The "Send namecard via" option in the contacts is NOT VCARD format! I've never seen a smartphone NOT use VCARD and it's very frustrating. Any way to change that? Being able to sort contacts by last name or by company name would also be a huge help...Samsung's contact list is frankly, TERRIBLY lacking.

Being able to change google to the default calendar would be great. (can't be done in 2.1 stock)

Lastly, The notification drawer I noticed now has a silent toggle which I guess is stock in the TW version of froyo- but I'd rather have a toggle for all data off (just calls and SMS active) there's widgets for this but not sure if froyo prevents them and I have no need for a silent toggle when I can activate that with the volume rocker.

+1 =D

Couldn't agree with you more. I used ext4 versions of quantam and bonsai and while they looked nice and performed a little better, the battery life with these roms made the phone practically unusable.

I switched back to 2.1 and am using Baked Snack with the step 2 kernal (ultimate kept freezing up my phone) and battery life is much better than ever before. I can now sometimes get through a whole day (12-15 hrs) without charging.

Does anyone know of any other ROMS that might have equal or better battery performance?

do any of these roms allow you to move apps to the sd card? that is the one main thing i want from froyo. i would like the faster quadrant scores you get from ext4, but would be willing to pass that up for the time being for the better battery life associated with bakedsnack and sd card capabilities if that is possible without froyo

I believe moving apps to the SD card is a Froyo only option. I don't think its possible even on custom Eclair roms.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
