Required "background data" ???

When I try to update google maps on my Thrive, this message from android market pops up:

the market needs background data to be enabled

The same message appeared when I attempted to download lookout mobile security.

Can someone please tell me what the "background data" includes?

I know that google is never satisfied . . . always demanding more personal information from all users. I'd like to know precisely what "background data" google will harvest if I decide to enable it . . .

Go to account & sync. And check background data.

I solved the issue by letting gmail on my Thrive sync with gmail---which I never use---But giving it permission to sync enabled me to deal with the Market.
