If I were to lower the resolution to 1200×800 would the display use less power?

Lower resolution use less power, but difference is weak.

Not really.
It's not as if half the LED's would be off, just that they would be in blocks.
You might save some processing power because the GPU would be rendering a coarser image.

Turn the screen brightness down a little bit if you can stand it.
That would help more than lowering the resolution.
