Restoring contacts after factory reset

So I did a factory reset on my girlfriends phone without backing it up. I assumed it was already backed up because google automatically does that on my phone. She didn't let me set up her phone so I don't know what she did but I guess she put in her google account. All her apps and everything backed up and got installed onto the phone but all her contacts are gone. I'm not at her house now so I can't figure it out. I'm just wondering why google only saved her apps but not her contacts. Is there anyway to recover them? She had to contacts since the first day she got her phone and all the apps that she downloaded after gettng her phone got backed up.

have you sign in again to google account? ensure contacts is checked.

if checking contacts on google sync doesn't work, check if it's just the contact app hiding the contacts saved on google.
