I returned it because the GPS, full refund. I then stopped at Verizon and got a Droidx to be delivered on the 18 of August. I wanted to keep it but Samsung is too quiet about the GPS issue, good luck to everyone.

Hmm, odd reason to return the Captivate, but to each their own. Good luck on the Droid X side of the house.

Same here, I used GPS a lot on my iPhone 3G; FourSquare, Twitter posts w/GPS, RunKeeper, maps and directions. No matter what I try the Captivate cannot get a GPS lock, and when it tries it drains the battery quickly. I called Samsung tech support and they seem to be clueless about the cause or any possible solutions.

I really tried to like the phone but between the GPS, the inconsistent bottom button behavior, the funky keyboards (whats with the keypress appearing a seemingly random spacing above the key?), the keypress sound resetting itself to loud randomly and the other general quirkiness it is just too difficult to keep this phone.

Captivate is going back Monday morning.

they keypress doesnt randomly reset itself... when u use the GPS nav it automatically turn it up so u can hear the turn by turn directions.. and samsung is suppose to push a fix for the GPS here soon..

Interesting, I'm going to give Samsung another week and a half to come up with a fix for this (my GPS is also completely hosed) but I think I'll be in the same boat (hitting up the 30 day window)

This excerpt is from another forum and it DOES work. I would suggest making this a Sticky.

TO anyone having problems with the gps follow these steps.

Navigate to Settings > Location & Security and uncheck the box next to “Use Wireless Networks.”
Go to the phone’s dialer and enter the number *#*#1472365#*#* then press send to access the phones LBSTestMode menu.
In the LBSTestMode menu, press “Application Settings” and change “Operation Mode” to “MS Based.”
Navigate to the “SUP/LCP Settings” and the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com (make sure NOT to place “www.” in front) and port 7276.
Make sure the settings are saved and reboot your phone.
Navigate back to Settings > Location & Security and check the box next to “Use Wireless Networks.”

and if you want to reset it do the same thing only with these codes.

Operation Mode: Standalone
SERVER: www.spirent-lcs.com
PORT: 7275

I am glad that fix works for some folks, but it did not work on my phone. I tried it yesterday and then watched as my phone attempted to get a GPS fix all the way home. :(

Thanks for posting, but this fix is not universally effective. Works for some not others. I am one of the "others".

So many great phones. Enjoy the Droid X, great phone! I'm keeping the Captivate--love it! :)

lol. Give them a chance to fix it. Its not a big deal really. Just give it some time.

If you don't return the phone then what incentive does Samsung have to fix the issues? People are already buying the devices as they are.

Eventually Im sure it will be fixed. Just have to give it some time. I had the same problems with BlackBerry phones from Verizon and AT&T. You have to wait until they push out the fix. Enough complaints will validate there response to this.

An update on my status. I tried the "fix" again and now it is working fine. I had already tried it twice, but for some reason it now works when it didn't work before. I suspect user error: )

The phone is good enough to where i dont mind waiting for the update for things to be fixed however i just bought the captivate today, hit traffic on the highway home so i hopped on google maps to check how much traffic there was and it got a lock almost instantly

Same with my Captivate except I have had it since July 18 *launch day*. It does take a bit longer to get a lock indoors but it still works with out a hitch for me. So I dont mind at all. Just hope Samsung releases an updated 2.1 which will be equal to the speed of the i9000 some people are flashing their captivates too. I am tempted but I don't want to mess with the phone too much yet.

Cheers,
Charlie

i rooted my N1 like nuts but i may just keep this stockified, though knowing me in about a week ill want to remove the ATT crap etc, i just cant wait for this to get 2.2 :)
