I love the HD 720p video and wanted a tripod for it but it's hard to find something like that for a phone. then I thought about zooming. So here's a review of a tripod and a zoom lens I bought.
Sima Tripod w/Universal phone/camera clip: ($11 on Amazon)
the tripod is well built. It's 3.75" tall and can extend to 6.75".
As you can see there is a universal clip with some silicone to protect it from scratching a phone or camera.
It fits the Epic quite well and is very sturdy.
You can adjust angle loosening the knob that is sticking out. You can also use this w/o the universal clip which will then make it a normal tripod for any camera.
Protocol 8x Zoom Telephoto Lens for phones
This is really just a generic lens you can get on ebay or dealextreme for $15 shipped but Protocol picked it up and packaged it. I got it off ebay as I think Bestbuy carried Protocol for a short time.
Here's what it looks like attached to the Epic on front view:
And back view:
I've attached the Epic and the 8x Lens onto the Sima tripod:
Here are 2 shots from the camera with and without zoom lens:
You can see a smidgen of darkness from the lens on the upper right hand corner. You have to position it well to make it almost perfect w/o the lens interfering.
How's the HD 720p video? check it out here.the first 15 seconds are without the zoom lens and then I attach it for the next 15 seconds.
Final thoughts on Lens
is it worth it? it might be. For $15 it's not bad. You have to fiddle around to make it position right so it doesn't have the blackout spots from the lens. And lastly sometimes it can push down on either the volume button or the power button.
All in all, if you want to use your HD camera to shoot video and need zoom like I do for my daughter's performances, it might work out well vs. buying an HD video camera.
