Revisiting the Pixel. What are your thoughts now?

Coming from Lumia 950, I miss a few things from the lumia (this may be surprising for some folks lol).

First is the native weather display on the glance screen (ambient display on the pixel). On the Lumia, native weather app will display on the glance screen with simplicity yet adequate information. I wish pixel could have native weather displayed as well.

2. The hide soft key on the Lumia. It is native, and works perfect. I tried installing a few apps on the pixel for same task, but non worked real well.

3. How the flash works in dark. On the Lumia, it flashes more like what a camera does, usually a quick 2 bright flash (it's got a three tone flash as well). On the pixel, although seldom needed the flash's aid, when needed, it kept the LED on for a good few seconds before it shoots. This may be due to the brightness of the flash (the Lumia is quite a bit brighter), but I don't really like the way it works in the dark. Makes me feel awkward since the long brightness attacks other's attention.

4. and last, and this is bugging me so much that I'm not sure if I'll keep the pixel for long- the fragile rear glass. I'm never a phone case person as I like the phone as is. But with the pixel, a case is essential. To prevent scratches on the supposedly G4 glass (which probably isn't) is easy, and I like a few offerings on textured protection sheets for the glass, but there is no way to protect the glass from breaking without having a case, which also adds bulk to the phone. I can't figure out why google decided having such a weird design other than wanting their selling cycle to roll faster. If they want glass, they could have not had the glass extend higher than its metal casing. I really don't think the pixel can stand any drop on concrete with back facing down. (how many people never dropped their phone say, for a year? I am extremely careful with my phones, but my Lumia was knocked off from my hand by my wife once, a little after its one year anniversary. If that was the pixel, the rear glass gotta have broken.) Plus, IF the glass does not extend over the camera lens, I'd "probably" be okay living with having a pieve of cracked glass, but there are already a couple of reports on reddit from people having cracks right through their camera.

Enough complaining... The phone does feel very smooth, screen is vibrant, battery life is good for me, and the main camera is great, front camera is very good also. App variety far superior to what windows has to offer. I finally have all the banking apps. (Although perhaps being a windows phone person for too long, I am kind of used to not having too many apps.) I like how metal casing feels.

Not to sound rude (and apologies in advance if i do) but i find majority of the people who buy the latest flagship phones, im referring to the people who buy multiple high end (best of the best) phones every year, are rarely satisfied. Because of the access to everything whenever we want it, i personally find we dont give enough opportunity to 'settle' with something long enough to appreciate the next thing.

Now, I am not like this with phones (i am usually a year or two behind, currently have a Nexus 6P) but i am exactly like this from a video games prospective. I generally buy the latest/greatest/hottest new games that come out and quickly become bored. I blame myself, i didnt need to buy specific games but did because i 'assumed' or expected i would like them...even though im enjoying another game at the moment. And now? Well i have like 3 newer games i got, bored of all of them...because they all feel "been there done that", and while that may seem true i do personally believe i did this to myself.

Sorry if this makes no sense, people cant relate or believe im talking out of my @ss but while i see the point of the initial post...my mind veers into 'we're too spoiled these days' mentality. If that offends people, apologies. Im not here trying to say "Cant you just enjoy what you have!!! Geez, dont complain..." because im just as at fault in my eyes, but maybe we just need to 'settle' for a bit and not jump at everything device or game that tempts us.

With that said, i dont have a Pixel but have tested them at a few local stores and think its amazing...i can see the benefits in terms of software and body right away. I also play with the S7 Edge and while i had an S6 and got bored of it after 1 year, i give props to Samsung for building a beautiful phone although i hate TW. So i can see the dilemma you have TC, both phones have their pros and cons.

my 2 cents.

Looking forward to the next round of Samsung releases and saving up to pay this phone off to get one. None of the issues I have with it seem likely to change.

I think you're absolutely right man!

But there must be something in your life which you regularly update just so you could have the latest and most advanced version of it?

I change phones because I want to have the latest and most advanced version of a mobile phone. I love mobile tech and I invest money and time learning about it too.

So by now, after using sooooo many phones I think I buy phones JUST to see what's good and what's bad about it. I don't get the latest phones to use them or enjoy them. I just get them to test what's out there.

And I know many people who get multiple phones do the same.

I love my pixel xl. Signal issues are gone. I got a new one for such, more hoped the new one came without the rattle. It's really the only gripe. The pixel xl is not the note 7, but in many ways is much better. I do find myself wondering if they will have any deals for trade in. Meaning the s8 or note8, if and when they are released, will Verizon offer any deals if I trade this phone in. As good as it is I am still looking for the next thing. Something I believe would not have been as tempting with the n7. I am sure Samsung will have a few tricks up their sleeves. Like the s8 will shoot fireworks out the sides and light your house on fire.

I also wonder if they will offer any further deals to former n7 owners.

Still the best android phone I've ever had. The only bug I have been experiencing still is the sudden dropped calls and on wifi calling the other end claims I sound terrible.

As for those saying its boring, its stock android! Its the pure experience and if you don't want that then root it and rom it!

I've had the Pixel for 3 to 4 weeks now. I came from an S7 edge and 2 years of using Samsung. Took a little 3 months break with the iPhone as well.

Here is my experience.

1st week = confusing and frustrating. Missed a lot of features from the S7 but did enjoy the smoothness of the Pixel as well.

2nd week = really loved the Pixel for its camera. The camera is absolutely amazing on this. And i take a lot of photos so this was a huge plus for me. The performance sort of faded to the background. The S7 never gave me performance issues either.

3rd week = the phone started to feel extremely boring. The performance stopped to matter. The camera was the only thing I was lingering on to. Kept it going.

4th week in = now that I see that nougat is rolling out on the S7 I feel really torn. Went to the shop one day with the intention to get the S7 edge back but couldnt do it. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't regret getting the Pixel. But I'm not completely satisfied either. It's a really weird phone. Half baked but still tastes good.

What are your honest thoughts after using the Pixel for a few months? Do you see yourself using this phone for a long time? What is the thing which has gotten you hooked?

Note: This post is not about Samsung vs Google. Just want to know your thoughts about the Pixel :)
i miss my note 7.... the Pixel is not a big deal...too much hype and all the advertisement for the phone and you get let down when you finally get it. I'm waiting for the next Samsung to be released and hopefully has a rear fingerprint scanner.
my pixel is slow at loading any app....going from screen to screen it's fast...but wifi and apps are slow...I get the loading arrow all the time...I've done a factory reset too..

I get this with pretty much every app...I even get it with Gmail and sometimes with settings.

That's a really weird bug you've been suffering from. Have you contacted Google?

I'm sorry man. But this isn't a normal thing to experience with the phone. You should do something about it.

Something has been tweaked with your settings. Go to apps in settings and reset all app preferences.

Then go to storage in settings and cached data. Clear all cached data.

See if it helps.

I'll try that and if it doesn't work I'll call Google...I've already called VZW for a problem with screen shots looking garbled when sent from my wife's iPhone.....but they look fine when using VZW message s

I loved the Pixel XL but I returned it. OP3T won me over. Great device though but not for me.

Just curious what makes u like 3T over pixel XL? Other than the price...

Speed, style of the device and I love the gestures, LED, notifications customization, and the speed of the finger print scanner to just name off a few things. I miss the Pixel XL camera but during the day light when I would take most of my photos the OP3T seems to get the job done. Per price for the experience I'm looking for OP3T delivers.

I still like the Pixel XL it was just a bit on the over priced side for me at the moment. If OP3T was the same price....Not sure where I would land over all. I'd still have to think about it. I really enjoy the OOS launcher with the light extras it gets.

The only two things which Pixel have over the Oneplus 3T are the camera and updates. I don't really care about the updates. But camera is all I care about. And ive used iPhones, Samsungs and LGs of today, the Pixel has something special going for it. I don't know how it does it. It's hard to get a bad photo out of it. The camera is the only thing which has got me hooked to the Pixel as I take my Instagram really seriously.

If Oneplus 3T had an equally good camera, it wouldve been the phone of the century for sure!

OP3T definitely is a great value, but the Pixel IMO has a better design, better camera, the same SoC, better software, better software updates, better security, better security updates, better compliance with USB standards, a better display and works for more than 100% more people within the US market than the OP3T does.

Yes, these too :)

But a normal user won't notice all these things. I think. Except for that last thing you mentioned.

But I have to say, the Oneplus 3T feels excellent in the hand. Round back. Thin edges. Small bezels. And the even distribution of weight. Win win.
